This gleaming, air-conditioned expanse of retail space is Silom’s answer to the mega malls of Sukhumvit and Siam. Whilst a little on the small size to merit ‘mega mall’ status, Silom Complex does boast four floors of high street shops, independent boutiques, restaurants, cafes, and a few hair dressers and beauty salons. Owned by the Central Group (hence sometimes referred to as ‘Central Silom’), you’ll find many of the usual Bangkok mall suspects including Mango, Jaspal, Accessorize, Swarovski and Asia Books alongside restaurant chains like the excellent Wine Connection, Piri-Piri Flaming Chicken and the high end Tops Market all in the basement.

Aside from being Silom’s most modern and comfortable shopping experience, it’s also one of the area’s most convenient too. You can access it directly from Sala Daeng BTS Station or via the main entrance at street-level on Silom Road. Read More...

Part bustling market, part notorious nightlife strip, Patpong Road is up there with Bangkok’s most well-known shopping/nightlife experiences.

Away from all the go-go bars and dodgy nightclubs that hug the side of the street and surrounding alleyways, Patpong Night Market actually presents a pretty comprehensive selection of market stalls selling all the usual tourist gear and one of the widest selections of imitation designer gear in Bangkok. This means a sea of knock off Ray Bans (100-500 baht depending on quality), Fred Perry and Ralf Lauren Tees (around 300 baht), Thai artwork like massive wooden sculptures of elephants, shoe shops and electronic stores. Pretty much everything here is fake, despite what you may or may not be told by the vendors, so bargain hard for a low price and bear in mind that those expensive looking ‘Armani’ watches may well fall apart after a few months. Don’t be fooled by Lailai Sap’s deceptively small entrance on Silom Soi 5. This is actually vast maze of market alleyways brimming with tasty Thai food stalls, as well as a plethora of other cheap and cheerful stores selling everything under the sun – quite literally in some of the unshaded areas.

The further you shuffle your way along the busy and narrow alleyway, the clearer the picture becomes of how big the place actually is. Tributaries left, right and centre lead you off course to discover hidden boutiques, knock-off electronics vendors, indoor wet-markets, hip little cafes and other miscellaneous stores. Lailai Sap Market is at its busiest between 12:00-14:00 on the weekdays when office workers leave their desks for their lunchtime fill and a quick bargain hunt at the same time. Read More...

This delightful Silom shop is part of the ever-expanding Jim Thompson Company, which has gained a national and international reputation for creating exquisite silk garments, beautifully hand-crafted products and traditional Thai homeware. Anyone who has taken a stroll along Silom or Sukhumvit Road, constantly being asked if they want a new shirt or suit, will be aware that Bangkok is bursting to the seams full of tailors. For one of the best around – both in terms of value and quality – look no further than Universal Tailors on Silom Road.

Shirts here are all custom made and fall in the 1,200-2,000 baht price range - about as much as you’d pay for an ill-fitting, poorer quality shirt in many Bangkok malls. Full suits are also well priced, starting at around 7,500 baht (just over $200). Despite rows and rows of nearby competition, Universal Tailors, which has been in business for almost 30 years, stands out from the crowd with its honest prices, attention to detail and excellent array of quality fabrics, especially their excellent Egyptian Cotton blends. Turnaround time is 1-3 days. Read More...

There’s a certain stigma attached to the luxury jewelry industry in Bangkok, particularly with the infamous gem scam whereby tuk-tuk drivers take unsuspecting tourists to gem shops where they’re pressured into buying cheap rocks at high prices. Avoid this by heading to the Jewelry Trade Centre on Silom Road for 100% genuine, independently certified rare gems and metals.

The Jewelry Trade Centre, or JTC for short, has been operating for over 15 years and you’ll find stones from Thailand, Sri Lanka, Myanmar and across Asia. The whole centre is home to numerous other shops, including Bangkok Fashion Outlet, whilst all the jewelry can be found in the basement, ground, second and third floors of the large complex. The best way to get there by heading to Surasak BTS Station and it’s roughly a 5 minute walk to Silom Road from there. Read More...

This Bangrak branch of the popular Robinsons Department store is at the edge of the Silom district, just a short walk away from Saphan Taksin BTS near the river. The modern mall covers a comprehensive range of shopping options, including familiar high street names, designer brands, homeware products, electronics and various food outlets spread over numerous floors.

Compared to the rest of the area, Robinsons Bangrak stands out like a sore thumb. The neighborhood, which lies at the very western end of Silom Road, is full of local street food vendors, old shop houses and oozes a certain rustic charm next to the Chao Phraya River. For a 21st century air-conditioned escape, head to the Robinsons mall at the corner intersection of Silom and Rama IV Roads. Read More...

With its borderline ‘hidden-gem’ status, Baan Silom is an ideal place to come for some picturesque outdoor and indoor shopping, dining and drinking. The classic colonial style house (‘baan’) is well maintained and immaculately presented with a charming courtyard full of trees and shaded areas perfect for an afternoon browse of all the shops and surrounding restaurants.

Shopping highlights include the quality jewelers D Quality Design, the pretty and pink Hilittlecraft that specialises in weddings and souvenirs, and NaRaYa, popular for bags and accessories. Baan Silom can be found just off Silom Road as you approach Silom Soi 19 - a few minutes’ walk from Surasak BTS Station. It’s also close the Jewelry Trade Centre (JTC). Read More...
