The stunning ThreeSixty Lounge at the Millennium Hilton Hotel is one of the best rooftop bars in Bangkok, and in a city that boasts dozens of lofty bars, that’s saying something. The main reason Three Sixty ranks amongst the best is the unique view it offers over the Chao Phraya River and across to the city’s main skyline. Whilst other rooftop bars in Bangkok are taller, their views are often a little less inspiring, surrounded by a sea of skyscrapers. Thanks to the unique riverside position of the Millennium Hilton, this is not so much of a problem. Guests are spoilt with 360 degree (hence the name) and an unobstructed panoramic view of Bangkok.
This night spot has both an outside terrace as well as an indoor lounge; particularly good for when it rains. It’s at this indoor area where you can catch the nightly jazz sessions, starting at 20:00. Read More...
2Meehay Pub and Restaurant Bangkok0
- Location: Millennium Hilton Hotel, 123 Charoennakorn Road, Klongsan
- Tel: +66 (2) 442 2000
Meehay Pub and Restaurant is fun and lively venue on Thonburi’s major Ratchadapisek Road. The spacious pub boasts all the key ingredients typical of Thai-style nightlife: authentic Thai food and beer served in three-litre towers? Check. A stage for live bands? Check. Cute waitresses refilling your glasses before they’re even close to empty? Check!
Although some staff at Meehay Pub might not fully understand you, the menus are all in English and it’s not too difficult to order by just by pointing – and that’s all part of the experience anyway. The manager also speaks English and is on hand to help if need be. Elsewhere there’s a pool table, live DJ event nights, sports screens, an outside seating area and a coffee shop. They also have whiskey promos every night including one bottle of Jonnie Walker Red Label for 980 baht with five free mixers – bargain! Find Meehay Pub and Restaurant just down from the Mall Tha Phra or ask your taxi driver for Rachadapisek Soi 8 (Thonburi).
3Next 2014 Pub and Nightclub0
- Opening Hours: 18:00-late (daily)
- Location: 199/4 Rachadapisek Road (Thonburi), Bangkok
- Tel: +66 (0) 8947 7000
We love Next 2014 Pub and Nightclub for its multiple personalities and stylish, almost underground-like decor with dark blue mood lighting and graffitied walls. Arrive early evening and you’ll probably have most of the place to yourself, meaning you can take advantage of their pool table and range of tasty Thai snacks and comprehensive booze list.
Come later on, however, and Next 2014 is more like a roadside nightclub, (especially on weekends) with regular live bands taking to their central stage as well as the odd DJ event (expect techno, house and big bass EDM drops which the Thais go crazy for). There’s plenty of seating options, service is quick and friendly and drinks are in the student price bracket (beers around 100 baht, whiskey bottles and mixer sets from 700-1000 baht +). Next 2014 Nightclub and Bar is near Wutthakat BTS, on the intersection of Wutthakat Road and Thoet Tha Road in Thonburi
- Opening Hours: 17:00 - late
- Location: Intersection of Wutthakat Road and Thoet Tha Road, Bangkok
- Tel: +66 (0) 88 994 4464
This world-famous, Polynesian themed bar and restaurant is located in the huge Anantara Hotel, and puts on probably the best nightly live music this side of the river. Every evening from around 20:30 they welcome some superb live bands which alternate every day. Expect everything from blues, jazz, funk and soul all with the romantic setting of the Chao Phraya River in the background and some excellent drinks promos.
Their regular a la cart menu has some fantastic seafood offerings as well as a range of Thai classics, Italian (pizzas and pastas), French (best for desserts) and various imported meats. The original Trader Vic’s restaurant in California was supposedly where the famous ‘Mai Tai’ was invented, so be sure to sample one of the finest mixes of this cocktail in the whole of Bangkok. The beautiful Baan Wanglang Hotel on the Thonburi side of the Chao Phraya River is home to several venues, with 342 Bar sitting right at the top of this quaint hotel. The Bar presents some stunning views across the river, with the palatial Grand Palace within full view if you can grab a spot on their open terrace, whilst there’s also an indoor area and bar for when it rains.
Drinks are reasonably priced and they put on a sturdy range of local and imported beers, wines and cocktails. The best time to arrive is, of course, around sunset as the sun is low, illuminating Bangkok’s main river in a beautiful red tone. You can then spend the rest of the night with drinks, nibbles, or head downstairs to Olive Tree restaurant, which is also part of the Baan Wanglang Hotel complex. From central Bangkok, go by taxi over the bridge or jump on a river boat that is going to Wang Lang Pier. Turn left as you disembark and the hotel and bar are about one minute away. Read More...
6The River Bar – Peninsula Hotel0
- Opening Hours: 12:00-late
- Location: 342 Soi Wat Rakang (Arun Ammarin 18) Bangkok
- Tel: +66 (0) 2 412 7234
As well as a five-star restaurant, several swanky lounges and a poolside terrace, Bangkok’s Peninsula Hotel boasts a stunning riverside bar - aptly named ‘The River Bar’. The venue enjoys all the benefits of being outside whilst at the same time is covered with a canopy in case of rain. The sumptuous white seating is both comfortable and stylish and the views across the Chao Phraya River, like many similar joints hugging the river on the Thonburi side, are simply stunning.
As for the menu, this is a five-star hotel, so expect swanky (and pricey) cocktails, wines and imported beers. Their signature ‘Thaijito’ is a blend of cheap ingredients like common Thai rum, peach schnapps, lime juice, mint, pineapple and sugar, yet the end result is surprisingly satisfying, even more so if you sip your drink as the sun sets over the river (from 18:00-19:00 in Bangkok all year round). Get to The River Bar at the Peninsular Hotel by taking a river ferry from the opposite side or by taxi.
7A Bar Above0
- Opening Hours: 15:00-24:00 Daily
- Location: The Peninsula Hotel Bangkok (Ground Level) 333 Charoennakorn Road, Bangkok
This sophisticated little spot sits just one floor up above the busy Rachadapisek Road in Thonburi. Easy on the eye from all angles, the small bar is decked out in plush lighting fixtures, wooden panels on the ceiling and has a cute little bar too, all making this place seem more like one of the hi-so bars you’d expect to find downtown in Thong Lor, for example.
Just like its interior, the menu at A Bar Above also shies away from any traditional Thai touches, with its range of European pub grub and imported beers on tap such as Stella and Hoegaarden. The hefty German sausages and traditional English fish ‘n chips are definitely recommended; this is probably one of the few places in the area you can find this kind of food. There is also an excellent garden-inspired restaurant below if you want a change of scenery. Find A Bar Above a short walk down the road from The Mall Tha Phra.
8Fang Thon Thaphra0
- Opening Hours: 18:00 - 01:00 Daily
- Location: 371 Ratchadaphisek Road, Thonburi, Bangkok
- Tel: +66 (0) 2476 5700
For cheap beers, spicy north-eastern Thai food, and tourist-friendly service - all set in a beautiful old Thai house right in the heart of Thonburi - you’d be hard pushed to find a better place than Fang Thon Thaphra. Although not particularly near any major landmarks or hotels (it’s on the side of the busy Petchkasaem Road), there is something ever so charming about this long running Thai restaurant and bar that draws in a mixed crowd every night.
What the 65-year-old traditional teak house lacks in the way of air-conditioning, it certainly makes up for in character, with aging photos hanging from the ceiling, vintage bikes laying about the place and some rather rugged-looking furniture all completing the look perfectly. Fang Thon Thaphra serves up mostly spicy Issan food which can be washed down with a local beer or two, accompanied by the occasional live music gig on the weekend.
9Zoom 4 Zoom 50
- Opening Hours: 16:00-01:00 Daily
- Location: 367/12 Petchkasaem Road, Bangkok
- Tel: +66 (0) 84 921 5012
Zoom 4 Zoom 5 is proof that you can go on a romantic dinner date in Bangkok - with drinks and a stunning riverside setting - for well under 1,000 baht. In fact, with many of the Thai dishes and beers here coming in at under 70 baht, you could probably get change from a 500 baht note - depending on how hungry you are and how much you like your date.
Other than being a romantic setting, this venue is great for families, friends or even solo travellers looking for a quick and cheap drink on the river. Zoom 4 Zoom 5 roughly means ‘to do something in a hurry’ in Thai; the self service counter and ultra fast service both justify its quirky and playful name. Find it just a few minutes’ walk from Wang Lang Market and its namesake pier on the Thonburi side of the river. Enter through the market or if you are coming by boat, get off the pier and turn right (or ask a local).
10Thonburi Plaza – Entertainment Complex0
- Opening Hours: 17:00-24:00 Daily
- Location: Soi Wang Lang, Wang Lang Market
- Tel: +66 (0) 226 1745
Whilst most nightlife in Thonburi is comprised of picturesque riverside spots, hotel rooftop bars and chilled-out local Thai pubs, Thonburi Plaza is a million miles away from any of the above descriptions.
This complex of clubs, lounges and massage rooms welcomes an almost exclusively Thai crowd, with the main Poseidon Club (not to be confused with the seedier Poseidon at Huay Kwang) being the biggest and best place to hit. The club features a mix of live bands and DJ sessions and gets rammed on the weekends. Adjacent to Poseidon Club is The Lounge, which offers a more relaxed vibe in terms of music, yet still has plenty of girls dancing, serving drinks and chatting to the customers. You’ll also find a snooker room, a massage and sauna centre and several karaoke rooms with more of those ever so friendly Thai waitresses to help fill up your glass and complement your singing.
