Best Things to See and Do in Pratunam

Any discussion of the must-see attractions in Pratunam can only start at one place, which happens to be the tallest place in the city too. The Baiyoke Tower, at 340 metres tall, dominates the Bangkok skyline and is a focal point of the area. That’s not to say there aren’t any other interesting things to do and see in Pratunam, which is an area usually more associated with its long list of shopping options rather than sightseeing.

Pratunam is packed with great hotels, and the whole area only encompasses a few busy square kilometres of central Bangkok between Phetchaburi Road towards the south and Chaturathit Road in the north. As well as the enormous Baiyoke Tower – and of course the must-see Pratunam Market - we have found a few other worthwhile spots, all of which can be discovered in our list of the Top 5 Attractions in Pratunam below.

Get a birds’ eye perspective of Bangkok with a visit to the observation deck on the 309 metre-tall Baiyoke Tower. A haven away from the crowded shopping centres and traffic jams of Bangkok’s busy streets, this skyscraper, which has been the tallest in Bangkok since its opening in 1997, offers visitors incredible panoramic views of the city from its skywalk on the 77th floor or its revolving observation deck on the 84th floor.

There’s also a shopping area, several restaurants, bar, as well as the highly recommended Baiyoke Sky Bangkok Hotel, one of the most iconic places to stay in the whole of Bangkok. You can find the tower just a few minutes’ walk away from Pratunam Market, and don’t worry about following your map - just look up! Read More...

This gorgeous collection of eight traditional Thai houses surrounded by a tropical garden and several ponds offer a sanctuary from the often relentless pace of Bangkok. This tranquil escape can be found right in the heart of the city, just a short walk from Baiyoke Tower in Pratunam. Suan Pakkad Palace also doubles up as a museum, and you can wonder around the gardens into each building, learning more about the fascinating history of the palace, which was once home to a Thai Princess.

Dotted about the garden is an array of artefacts, antiques and mini exhibits on display, as well as some interesting Buddhist memorials and shrines adding to that peaceful, almost spiritual atmosphere. Please note that there is an admission charge into Suan Pakkad Palace, but at only 100 baht it’s well worth the price.  Read More...

Dominating the whole district, Pratunam Market is a centre of all things shopping in this small area of central Bangkok. Pratunam Wholesale Market, to give it its full title, specialises in clothes and apparel; from knock-off Fred Perry tees and 50 baht Ray Bans to full-length silk dresses and sarongs, this market epitomises market shopping in Bangkok where the emphasis is firmly on cheap garments.

There is a fair share of tailors dotted around the area and the market also has a section dedicated to fancy dress, with wigs, feathers and plenty of snazzy hats. The entire market is covered by a huge roof, reminiscent of the larger Chattuchak Market in the north of the city, and if things get too sweaty you can always escape to one of the nearby malls, such as Platinum, Shibuya 19 or B-Gallery. Pratunam Market is technically open all day, every day, but come before 10:00 in the morning and you might find that many stalls are shut. Read More...

Red Sky is a swanky rooftop bar perched on top of the Centara Grand hotel at Central World shopping mall, and definitely is a recommended remedy to that sluggish post-shopping feeling. Whether you’ve been browsing the malls of Siam or tackling the hectic Pratunam Market, Red Sky rooftop bar is easily reachable from each of these places, and offers some stunning panoramic views of these two shopping districts.

The bar’s iconic arch is the focal point, simply stunning when illuminated at night 55 storeys above downtown Bangkok. The excellent international cuisine and range of beers, wines and cocktails are on the pricey side, but you’re paying both for the quality as well as those all-important city views.  Read More...

Known locally as ‘the lover’s shrine’, Trimutri Shine just outside Central World supposedly brings its believers luck in love. Singles flock to the Buddhist monument every night of the week, presenting the gods above offerings in multiples of nine, such as nine incense sticks, nine candles, nine roses, etc - which is apparently the key to finding true love in the future. So, even if superstitions aren’t your thing, you can always head here to find an abundance of love-struck singles waiting to find their Mr or Mrs Right.

Just a short walk across the canal from Pratunam, Trimuti Shrine isn’t the most spectacular monument in the Thai capital, but it might just be one of the most interesting thanks to its peculiar location lying in the shadows of the vast Central World mega mall, with Bangkok’s relentless traffic whizzing past just a few metres away.  Read More...
