If Wanara devoted as much attention to taste as it did to excellent presentation, this would be a very special restaurant. As it is, the food is frustratingly inconsistent. Sirloin spring rolls is a delicious combination of rare meat and punchy, Vietnamese-style herbs in a rice wrap. Sea scallops with saffron risotto could be as good if it were not served barely lukewarm. Lobster bisque and caesar salad are among the other starters. A selection of Thai main courses includes pad thai, and first-rate khao pad with fat, juicy prawns. However, a tasty pesto crust fails to redeem a rather bland, dry piece of salmon. The dessert selection is small; a very good, not-too-sweet New York-style cheesecake really doesn�t need the nondescript blueberry goo that accompanies it. Ice cream and lemon tart are alternatives.

Setting

Wanara (Thai for forest) is based in a posh boutique hotel, some way down a subsoi. The elegant, understated decor is based around shades of grey, with marble table-tops and twisted wire wall features.
