The well-off, attractive, mostly young clientele at Vanilla probably don't prioritise innovative cuisine in their hectic social lives, but the food is still more than adequate. Deep-fried eringi mushrooms with anchovy mayonnaise make for a good nibble while pondering further choices. Onion soup is a properly French starter, with a hearty beef stock and cheesy topping. There are a few Asian dishes and plenty of imaginative pasta choices; consider squid-ink spaghetti with freshwater prawns and pungent garlic butter. Western mains include fish and chips, duck confit and pork chop with a nicely chunky apple sauce that almost makes up for the blandness of the meat. For dessert, peruse a pleasing selection of crepes, waffles and sundaes; quite a few people go along for this part of the menu alone.
