The menu nods to fusion (foie
gras sushi, anyone?) but it mostly revolves around
conventional Japanese classics. Sashimi is ultra-fresh,
thick-cut and beautifully presented, with toro (fatty
tuna) and yellowtail especially good. Sushi is also
good, although eel nigiri is perhaps a little overcooked.
Seafood salad with kimchi and pine nuts is an intriguing
combination of tastes and textures, chunks of octopus
responding especially well to the pickle. Chilled udon
is perfectly cooked, the noodles a good foil to the
dipping sauce. Only tempura lets the side down, with
rather too much batter. There's a better selection of
desserts than is often found at Japanese restaurants,
with cheesecake and creme brulee in addition to the
usual ice cream and fruit.
This large outlet of the Nippon-Tei chain offers all the main aspects of Japanese cuisine, amidst the bustle of a high-end shopping mall. Service aspires to the seamless perfection of the Japanese model, but doesn't quite get there.
