Food

Operated by a Thai princess's son and his actor business partner, Thanying serves an extensive menu in the style of the Sukothai palace. Dive right in with meang, pieces of dried shrimp, shallot, ginger, lime, peanuts, crispy pork and chilli in a kale leaf with sweet sauce; the contrasting flavours and textures dance on the tongue. Yum pla dook foo (deep-fried catfish and mango salad) has a yummy tang to go with the lightly crunchy fish. Tom yum koong is spicy and aromatic, enhanced by large, succulent shrimps. Wildcatch steamed sea bass with lime, lemongrass and chilli is flavourful yet delicate. The delicious coconut milk base in green chicken curry offers such a rich treat that you might want to order a second helping. The dessert selection is rather limited comprising fresh fruit skewers, or a choice of cooked banana and pumpkin served with coconut milk.

Setting

In an old Thai house on a soi between Silom and Sathorn Roads, the three dining areas are decorated with antiques offering a step back in time from Bangkok's hyper-speed present.
