Food

Tapas is snack food, originally designed to accompany drinks. There are a few conventional main dishes, such as paella or chicken in wine sauce, but most diners order a selection of the smaller items that give the cafe its name. Patatas bravas adds garlic mayonnaise to the standard combination of potatoes and tomato sauce. Ham and egg croquette is soft and comforting inside its crispy coating, while fried calamari is tender and tasty, avoiding the rubberiness than can afflict squid. Unexpected spicing offers new sensations: garlic prawns benefit from a jolt of chilli; smoked paprika deliciously enhances Galician-style octopus. There's also a fine selection of Spanish hams, including the connoisseur's favourite, pata negra. Save room for dessert: crema catalana is Spanish creme brulee with a cinnamon kick; tarta Santiago balances the sour notes of quince paste with almondy sweetness.

Setting

Located in a pleasant alcove, surrounded by other restaurants and bars. The concrete design is functional rather than luxurious, although interesting modern art livens the place up.
