This venerable establishment makes no attempt to be innovative or cutting-edge, and its loyal clientele rather seems to like it that way. Dim sum is very popular at Saturday lunch; scallop and water chestnut dumplings are especially fine. Or begin a full meal with soup: bamboo pith and mushroom is subtle and calming; hot and sour could do with a touch more sour. Peking duck is a highlight, the skin crisp and tasty, the sauce not too sweet, the excellent pancakes made in-house. Sand goby in garlic sauce is just one of a host of excellent fish dishes. Various combinations of shark's fin and abalone do a roaring trade. The dessert list is substantial by comparison with some Chinese eateries; concoctions involving frog gelatin will tempt the less squeamish.

Setting

Bright, light and airy, not too cluttered with the knick-knacks that bedevil some Chinese restaurants. At peak times there's an enjoyable sense of purposeful bustle.
