What the food at Rioja lacks in refined elegance it makes up for in hearty flavours and portions. A selection of appetisers can act as tapas to accompany a bottle or two, or to whet the appetite for a full meal. Grilled octopus, potato omelet and prawns with garlic and chilli are all good choices, although grilled peppers with Iberian ham is perhaps a little generous with the salt. Three varieties of paella make good communal options, and there are several steak, poultry and fish choices. Some interesting salads include rocket with bacon-wrapped rock lobster and a Spanish variant on caesar salad, with manchego cheese replacing the parmesan. Desserts are not quite so enticing; consider crema catalana or yoghurt ice cream with raspberry sauce.

Setting

If the name isn't enough, exposed bricks, bullfighting posters and a replica of the football World Cup offer further heavy hints to the origin of Fernando Andres's cuisine. This is a place for relaxed eating and drinking, in the Spanish tradition, abetted by efficient, helpful staff.
