Niu's is a jazz club, but the food isn't just an afterthought to the music; ingredients are top-class and the menu doesn't just play safe. Starters are mostly Italian with a twist; seared tuna combines pomelo and olive tapenade while a salad of radicchio and dark chocolate is a brave experiment in bitterness that doesn't quite come off. Portobello mushrooms sandwiched with tomino cheese is more successful. Some of the pasta selections are also unusual such as rigatoni with lamb and mushrooms; paccheri with braised beef cheek. Main courses are, on the whole, more conventional: tender, flavoursome wagyu beef, served without any distracting sauces; Australian rack of lamb; slightly overdone salmon with asparagus. Desserts offer some new takes on old favourites, such as tiramisu with strawberries or panna cotta with coffee. Warm chocolate tortino with raspberries is another pleasant close to the meal.

Setting

Niu's is between sois 17 and 19 of Silom Road, the quieter end. Eat on a pleasant terrace with water features, then take your drinks to the leather armchairs inside for some excellent live jazz.
