Whitewashed walls, dark wood flooring and doors are a respite from the chaos around the Emporium across the road.

FOOD

Japanese cuisine is well represented here from home-style favourites to classic standbys. The two recommended dishes are excellent: kani cream croquette is a delicate breadcrumb shell hiding a creamy crab and onion filling, while zaru soba noodles thinner than anywhere else have an unparalleled fresh chewiness. Offerings from the grill are also delectable: beef tataki, thinly sliced rare beef on a feathery bed of onions is topped with a spicy tangy dressing; thick slices of succulent, flavourful gyutan shioyaki, grilled ox tongue, should not be missed; and toothsome ika (squid) teriyaki is a testament to the grill chef's skills. For dessert, baked rice cakes, mochi, are good in oshiruko, sweet red bean soup.
