Food
For many years now, locals, expats and tourists have been negotiating the narrow soi that leads to Baan Klang Nam because it offers excellent seafood with the minimum of fuss or ostentation. Oysters come with the traditional Thai accompaniments (fried onion, lime, mimosa, etc) but are fat and fresh enough to enjoy as they are. Tom yum is offered several ways; for a change, try it tempered and thickened with coconut. Tod mun or Thai fishcakes is juicy and satisfying. Yellow crab curry is piquant, but subtle enough for the sweet taste of the crustacean to come through. Fried garoupa strikes a rare false note; the sauce is so dense with chilli and sugar that the fish almost seems like an afterthought. Desserts tend towards Thai favourites; try mango with sticky rice, or sesame dumplings in ginger syrup.
Setting
Baan Klang Nam offers rustic, atmospheric dining on wooden platforms over the Chao Phraya itself. The river view, especially at night, is delightful.
