Baan Khanitha is a good entry-level
restaurant for Thai food novices: spicing is moderate,
but not entirely absent. The sweetness quotient
occasionally rises above the norm, which works for
some dishes but not all; a dish of black pepper softshell
crabs gets a lovely, sticky caramel tinge, but the
citrussy sharpness one might expect from yum som-o
is rather muted. Green chicken curry is excellent, the
tender meat and crisp vegetables retaining their texture
and identity. Tod mun kung (prawn cakes) scores highly
on texture, but impresses less on flavour. Stir-fried
kale with chilli is a nice, crunchy accompaniment. Fried
bananas or mango with sticky rice make for a satisfying
close.

One of three Thai restaurants under the Baan Khanitha banner, the Sathorn outpost is in a smart wooden house at the mouth of Soi Suan Plu, with an art gallery and coffee shop attached. Service is polite, efficient and confident
