The new menu has been designed with care and is overwhelmingly influenced by northern Italian cooking, with the odd nod to the islands (Sardinian bottarga, for example). It has a good mix of dishes that are generally modest in their ambition but inventive enough to rise above the usual re-hashed Italian suspects. A sensible set of tasting options for each course allows you, for example, to sample a selection of pasta dishes while choosing your own starter. The use of foamed sauces lends a lightness to some traditionally heavy dishes such as carbonara. However, there are instances when dishes are let down by overcooked pasta or less-than-tender meat. A small selection of imported beef is available for those who want a no-nonsense main. There is also a pizza menu. The dessert list is tempting but without any flashes of genius you might expect from a top-notch hotel.

Setting

With a riverside location and an elegant split-level dining room with alfresco option, the setting is definitely Angelini�s best asset.
