SETTING
The original, 105-year-old Angelina in Paris gives you a fine view of the Rue de Rivoli; in its new, open-plan setting in a Bangkok department store, you get to watch people buying Benetton sweaters.
FOOD
This is a French-style cafe, specialising in light bites rather than haute cuisine. Salade nicoise, quiches, omelettes, rosemary frites and good, cheesy onion soup are all present and correct. Attempts at fusion are less successful; thai ratatouille is so sweet and pungent that it swamps the fried snapper it is meant to enhance. tender chicken with a tasty roquefort crust is a better bet. But at Angelina, the starters and mains are simply a prelude to a superb selection of cakes, pastries and other desserts. the signature mont blanc - meringue with chestnut puree - may be too sugary for some, but tarte au citron gives the optimum balance of sweet and sour, and millefeuille oozes vanilla custard. If your eyes are bigger than your stomach, Angelina offers a takeaway service.
