Suvarnabhumi Airport Rail Link Project (SAL)

Once completed, Suvarnabhumi Airport Rail Link will be the quickest and most convenient way to get to and from the airport. Stretching 28.6 kilometres from inner Bangkok (starting from Makkasan area) to Suvarnabhumi Airport with its two routes (Express Line and City Line), the rail is designed to allow passengers to get between the city and the airport in 15 minutes and to connect with other mass rapid transportations in the capital (BTS Skytrain and MRT). The Express Line (Red Line) will provide a non-stop 15-minute ride from Makkasan/Asoke Station (City Air Terminal) to Suvarnabhumi whereas the City Line (Blue Line) stops at the eight stations, including Suvarnabhumi Station.

Updates on the Suvarnabhumi Airport Rail Link Project
The project was originally due for completion in August this year (2007), but due to the delay in the handover of land in the Decha community in Phyathai district, the rail link is almost 50% behind schedule. According to sources, the problem stems from a lack of efficient planning, implementation mechanisms and the processes used are sensitive to political instability.

The B. Grimm consortium (including Sino-Thai Engineering & Construction and Siemens) contracted to build the 30 billion baht mega project has written to the State Railway of Thailand (SRT) asking for a deadline extension of 652 days, based on the delay in the handover of land. The contractor stated that the expropriation of the land in the Decha community started on May 19, 2005, later than the 90-day timeframe agreed to in the contract. However, a construction supervision consultant for the project has suggested that the extension of the construction deadline should not exceed 398 days. This resulted in a recent compromise between the SRT and the project's builders to settle for an additional 463 days for construction.

It is hoped and expected that the project will be completed by November next year (2008), before its scheduled opening the following month on His Majesty the King's birthday (December 5).
