Sukhumvit Restaurants

Where and What to Eat in Sukhumvit

The staggering variety of dining available on Sukhumvit Road is a wonderful testament to the diversity of cultures that converge here. Eateries range from old noodle shops and street vendors to international restaurants and fast-food outlets, settings from the luxurious to the non-descript prices from the astoundingly cheap to the prohibitively expensive.

Global fast-food franchises like Burger King, Subway, McDonald's, Starbucks, KFC are scattered all over Sukhumvit. More intriguing though is the street food - among the best in town.

As interesting, but nowhere near as cheap, are Sukhumvit's many restaurants. Some are on Sukhumvit Road itself, near the hotels, but most are tucked away down the area's many side streets (sois). Great places for lunch, dinner or a snack, these offer cuisine from around the globe, usually in a decorative setting that befits their menu.

Phuket Town

This shop-house restaurant brings a slice of Phuket’s culinary and architectural heritage to Bangkok. The restaurant’s bright-yellow façade showcases Phuket’s signature Sino-Portuguese door archway, old wooden door panels and coloured glass windows. Inside, the life-sized wall mural depicting the perspective view of a Phuket street makes you feel like you are actually in Phuket Town.

While the ambiance is a plus, the food here really does shine. Pad sataw goong, kanom jeen nam ya poo and kua kling Phuket are among the must-try dishes. But be warned, though, as the southern Thai cuisine is very spicy. If you are not immune to chilis, dining at Phuket Town, while extremely palatable, will leave you in tears.

Suda Pochana

This is one of the best places to eat Thai in Bangkok, offering an authentic dining experience, best reflected in the décor, menu and eye-wateringly reasonable prices. Don’t expect much from the décor; the main emphasis is on the food. The crab in curry powder comes highly recommended. Hidden down soi away from the hustle and bustle of Sukhumvit, most evenings an elephant will make an appearance.

A blast from the past! This American-style diner transports you back to the 1950’s with its multi-coloured neon lights, shiny double doors, juke boxes and classic leather booths. Whale's Belly Restaurant & Bar

The Whale Belly restaurant and bar is designed to remind people of Disney’s classic cartoon Pinocchio, but thankfully the result is far classier than you imagine. With navy walls and curved white ceiling imitating whale’s bones, the theme is subtle. Don’t worry about feeling claustrophobic, as this belly has large bay windows with a panoramic view of Sukhumvit below. In keeping with the fishy theme, the menu has a seafood focus, but they also serve up tasty Australian steak and lamb from New Zealand. Take a taxi to get here, as it’s quite a distance from the BTS.

Xuan Mai

This two-storey shop-house restaurant claims to serve ‘the most authentic, interesting and delicious Vietnamese food in Bangkok’. Quite an ambitious statement to make, although not at all uncommon in Bangkok’s dining scene. With a beauty pageant-turned-FBI agent-turn-chef at the helm, Xuan Mai has got quite a story to tell. But what about the food? Besides Vietnamese mainstays, Xuan Mai's menu offers a number of speciality dishes, such as Vietnamese papaya salad (no, it's not som tam), grilled chicken with coconut and mung bean sticky rice as well as Saigon-style cold noodles. The food here has received more than a dozen ‘two thumbs up’ from local food critics, so Xuan Mai does live up to its bold claim.

Opening Hours: 11:00 - 14:00, 17:00 - 22:00 (Tues-Thurs); 11:00 - 14:00, 17:00 - 24:00 (Fri-Sun); Closed Mondays

Yumeiji

This hole-in-the-wall restaurant is popular among Asoke office workers, many Japanese expatriates. It has strong Japanese character, with hanging red lanterns out front and a stairwell greeting you upon entering. Until you make your way to the second floor will you find the sushi bar and a few tables. Continue up to the third floor for a bit more space. Hand-written menus in Japanese adorn the walls, a good indicator of authenticity. The multi-page lunch set menu covers all the popular dishes and a few special combos. Drinks include a range of imported sakes and beers.

WTF Café and Gallery

WTF Café and Gallery opened after four friends decided that Bangkok was lacking somewhere to eat, drink and be artistic. Its success is down to the relaxing atmosphere they have created - a lot of good things come from working with people you like. WTF has an innovative cocktail list and some tasty tapas comfort food – two more reasons it has become a firm favourite for both locals and visitors. It is a short five-minute walk from Thong Lor BTS on Sukhumvit soi 51 and a great place for drinks and dinner in an unpretentious setting. Read More...

Zanzibar Restaurant

The tropical ambience you experience when visiting Zanzibar feels more like a relaxed beachside location than in the busy metropolis of Bangkok. It is also perhaps the inclusion of pizza and pasta on the menu which lead to it often being called an Italian restaurant, but do not be fooled, this restaurant specialises in Thai fusion style cooking.
