The Peninsula Spa

Launched at the end of 2006, The Peninsula Spa by ESPA offers a deeply personalised spa experience, featuring some of Bangkok's best-skilled therapists. Located in a new three-storey Thai colonial-style building adjacent to the hotel's Fitness Centre, the 1,774 square meter spa will have 14 treatment rooms and four suites, a tea lounge and relaxation rooms - creating a full-service oasis in the heart of the city that is a spa destination in itself. It will also be officially the biggest hotel spa in Bangkok.

As part of the 'Peninsula Wellness' programme, The Peninsula Hotels joined forces with leading international spa consultancy ESPA, headed by renowned spa authority Susan Harmsworth, to develop the ultimate in spa concepts. ESPA has created exclusive treatments and products tailored for Peninsula guests, and ESPA-branded products are the sole product line carried in The Peninsula Spa. Treatments draw upon Eastern and Western wellness and relaxation philosophies, emphasising a back-to-basics approach.

A journey into natural balance

"At ESPA we believe in a treatment philosophy that begins and ends with an individual's needs," says Harmsworth. "By paying attention to detail, the standard of our service can be consistent with the quality of the treatment programme. In many ways, The Peninsula and ESPA are aligned in standards.

Every hotel and spa is completely different in terms of setting, and our customers come to us with very diverse needs. Whether it is catering to the stress brought on by a particular urban climate, or the increasingly hectic pace of travelling and work-related tension, our spas venture into a journey of deep calm by adapting accordingly to an intrinsic need for natural balance."

The Peninsula Spa by ESPA was designed by Hong Kong-based Henry Leung, designer of  the award-winning spas at The Peninsula Beijing and The Peninsula Hong Kong (also in collaboration with ESPA).  Fusing traditional Thai elements with contemporary flair and featuring uniquely designed silk fabric, hand-crafted decorations, aged wood and red bricks, The Peninsula Spa in Bangkok offers an environment of tranquility.

Treatment rooms have been designed to minimize sound and competing scents from other rooms, and even the air-conditioning systems are isolated to eliminate any potential distractions. All rooms are multifunctional to accommodate both face and body treatments. Treatments are performed on fully-automated massage tables, designed by leading designer Clodagh in partnership with Oakworks. The relaxation rooms feature custom-made oak and steel beds with activators that allow personal adjustments - from sitting to lying down at the touch of a button. Each relaxation bed also has a personal music system and flexible gooseneck reading lamp.

Taking spa indulgence to utterly delightful heights

Encouraged to arrive 30 minutes prior to treatment, guests may then begin relaxation in earnest in the tea lounge. An in-depth wellness consultation will be conducted while enjoying a selection of the indigenous herbal teas from the Royal Project, initiated by the King's mother, HRH Princess Srinagarindra of Thailand. This Royal Project (or 'Doi Tung') is located in Chiang Rai, in the north of Thailand. It is a development project to eradicate opium supply, drug use and rural poverty through sustainable alternative development, and the tea plantations have achieved such high standards that they grow some of the best Oolong tea varieties in Southeast Asia.

In addition to a wide range of personalised face and body treatments, the spa offers speciality treatments including ESPA for Men, and pre- and post-natal treatments, while anti-cellulite hip and thigh, and deep-cleansing back massages that address those areas of concern.

Guests can enhance their experience with The Peninsula Half-Day and Full-Day Spa Journeys by reserving one of the four exclusive Private Spa Suites for two, offering private changing areas, steam showers, double baths and double treatment areas. Each Private Spa experience incorporates an hour of relaxation time to enjoy the facilities prior to treatments. A selection of healthy drinks, 'Naturally Peninsula' light and healthy cuisine and specials from the 'Chef's Garden' is also included in the experience. A surcharge applies for use of Private Spa Suites in addition to treatment charges.

Naturally Peninsula... fabulously natural!

To round off the whole experience, guests can also enjoy the hotel's three-tiered outdoor swimming pool with private Thai pavilions ('salas'), and Fitness Centre facilities including saunas, steam rooms, and hot and cold whirlpool baths.

The opening of The Peninsula Spa by ESPA follows the launch of the Peninsula Wellness campaign - a lifestyle programme designed to touch every aspect of a guest's lifestyle, both during their stay and beyond. The innovative programme goes far beyond mere pampering - it is designed to appeal to all the senses, and includes healthy organic meal options under the 'Naturally Peninsula' food range at Peninsula dining outlets, a 'Naturally Peninsula' cooking class, a natural toiletry range entitled 'Simply Peninsula' and even soothing mood music with exclusive Peninsula Spa CDs.
