Highlights of Silom Nightlife

With its great selection of pubs, clubs and bars, Silom rarely disappoints the party crowd. Fancy sipping a Guinness while watching the latest football match beamed live from Europe? Make your way to Molly Malone's Irish Pub (formerly The Irish X Change) in Soi Convent, or O'Reillys right underneath the Sala Daeng BTS station. Want to experience Silom's naughty side? Head to world-renowned Patpong, where you'll find a procession of tightly packed go-go bars.

Or perhaps you fancy more trendy, more wholesome? Then seek out one of the clubs with live bands or beat-spinning DJs strung along Patpong Road. These get very busy around midnight, and include Radio City, Twilo, Funky Dojos and Lucifers.

Nearby Silom Soi 4 - something of an age-old institution among long-time Bangkok revellers - is also home to a few clubs pushing pulsating beats, including the grotto-like house music club, Tapas, and hip-hop den Luminous (go to Silom clubs for a listing of all venues).

Not far from Sala Daeng BTS Station is Soi Thaniya, the famous 'Little (naughty) Tokyo' with neons signs hanging from facades just like in Japan. The street abonds with really good and affordable Japanese restaurants, but you will have to resist the many pretty ladies inviting you... in Japanese.

Silom Clubs

Diversity and personality are the two words that sum up Silom's clubbing scene. Wedged in between Silom Soi 1 and 4 are some of the city's most established and exhilarating party houses. Discover from a chic Moroccan grotto with Balearic house music to a funky white box with funky shows and music to match, a hip-hop institution for aspiring rappers and a 'demonic' nightclub spinning hardcore techno and trance music all night long.

9 Night Club

The newest addition to Silom Soi fours array of venues – 9 Night Club, is a three-storey space, playing techno and the odd camp classics. It offers a real spectacle in the form of a drag cabaret comprising elements of humour, glamour, and culture for the lively audience.
  • Opening Hours: 19:00-late
  • Location: Silom soi 4
  • Price Range: Affordable. Entrance fee is 200 THB plus one drink on a weekend

Breaks

A small, low-key space decked out like an underground warehouse party and with a music policy and crowd to match. Reeking of mainstream defiance, 12" record covers hang off the walls instead of the usual generic fittings. These, and the uncompromising nights it hosts, are the joyous end-product of the Japanese proprietor's devotion to rebellious dance music.

Disco, indie, drum & bass, old school hip-hop, electro, roots, techno, Latin - any fresh, edgy sound brimming with attitude gets an airing. If disillusioned with what qualifies as real music in Silom's other clubs, 'Breaks' comes recommended.

  • Opening Hours: 21:00 - 03:00 (Wed, Thu, Fri, Sat)
  • Location: Soi 2/1 Silom Road (next to Richard's restaurant, up some stairs)
  • BTS: Sala Daeng

Lucifers Disko

Located halfway down Patpong 1, on the left-hand side of the Patpong Night Bazaar, is Lucifer. Inside is a big, two-level club where red-eyed demon masks glare down onto a crowd dancing away to anything from pop and dance through to hardcore techno and trance music. Staff clad in orange uniforms and Satan's horns serve a large variety of alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks. Amazingly, considering the size of the place, there is no cover charge. Always loud, sometimes packed.

  • Opening Hours: 19:00 - 02:00
  • Location: 76/1-3 Patpong Soi 1
  • BTS: Sala Daeng
  • Tel: +66 (0)2 234 6902

Luminous

Formerly Soi 4 hip-hop institution 'Speed', this is essentially the same multi-floor venue, only they've maxed up the 'bling' and juggled around the DJ booth and bar. When its dark, the whisky flowing, the beats bumping, you can barely tell the difference. Not a bad thing considering it was the rawest hip-hop club in town for years.

Like the old days, it only really gets busy on weekends, and upstairs - where house music reins - is still a ghost land. However, the odd one-off event (Dude Sweet, Club Soma and DJ Nakadia have all staged nights here recently) is drawing more eclectic crowds - ravers, not just aspiring rappers. The al fresco area out front is a good spot for seeing whose coming and going on flirty Soi 4, and the whisky sets notable for not slaying your wallet.

  • Opening Hours: 21:00 - 02:00
  • Location: 78/80 Silom Soi 4
  • Subway: Sala Daeng
  • Tel: (089) 890 8441

Park Bridge

One of the newest additions to Bangkok’s after hours scene, this is the place to head to get down and dirty with the city’s hard core clubbers. A trendy lounge style club, which is set on the skybridge that connects the parking lot with an all-hours snooker parlor, the glassed-in container-sized, rectangular lounge with a concrete floor, affords some interesting views of the world underneath, Patpong.

  • Opening Hours: 21:00-05:00
  • Location: 3rd Fl. Patpong Soi 2
  • Price Range: Pricey.300 THB entrance with one drink after 02:00

Radio City

Something of an institution in Bangkok, Radio City is worth heading down to around 23:00, when the star act comes on, usually Tom Jones or Elvis. The uncanny impersonations make for some great fun and without fail succeed in pleasing the crowd.
  • Opening Hours: 19:00- 02:00
  • Location: 76/1-3 Patpong Soi 1, Silom Road
  • Price Range: Affordable. No entrance fee required

On groovy and predominantly gay Soi 4, this chic Moroccan grotto is the place to go for Balearic house music. Set in an atmospheric two-storey venue, it attracts a straight, hip and beautiful crowd, the occasional celebrity just itching to be spotted. Live percussionists perform twice a week.

While a great price to chill during the week, it's usually hot and heaving on weekends, especially upstairs. Should the interior's charm turn to claustrophobia, head for the al fresco area out front with its rattan chairs, chatty cocktail enthusiasts and processions of toned men and other night creatures. Twilo

'Twilo' is the kind of chic open-fronted venue that, if it was plunked in Rome or Paris, would soon be heaving with svelte, young sophisticates sipping cosmopolitans and carousing to sultry deep house. The music - the same nightly formula of turgid live hip-hop - is geared towards drawing in the largest possible number of passing tourists. They, in turn, attract the largest possible number of Patpong's freelancing bargirls. And, in a rather depressing vicious circle, their presence attracts even more tourists. Still, though drinks prices are high, the droves keep on coming and the place is often hopping.

  • Opening Hours: early - 03:00
  • Location: 70 Patpong Soi 1, Silom
  • BTS: Sala Daeng

Bada Bing is a fun-loving and friendly bar on Patpong Soi 2 where every night over 25 girls dance provocatively on stage dressed in sexy denim micro-shorts, army uniforms, nurses outfits and many other fantasy costumes that wouldn’t keep you warm, but certainly make the customers heat up. The bar design is modern, the service prompt, and best of all, Bada Bing is one of the only bars in the Patpong area where you can totally relax and enjoy yourself. Located at the top of the United Center office tower, Cloud 47 is quite different from any other rooftop you might have heard of or visited before. The location right in the centre of popular Silom Road, just past the famous Patpong night market and evening entertainment zone, is also quite convenient… if you know where to look! Read More...

Hu'u

Catering to the city's sexy elite, the atmospheric Hu'u bar (pronounced 'who') oozes sophistication. Dim violet tones and dark wood floors set the tone, with Thai silk-upholstered sofas, tall-bar and a striking liquor shelf rounding off the ever-so stylish ambiance of this two-storey atrium lounge. A mezzanine restaurant upstairs serves international cuisine, but snacks are also served in the bar.

The impressive drinks menu offering over 150 cocktail concoctions will keep you busy, and prices are not staggeringly expensive like at other places of similar calibre. DJ's play proper nu-jazz and chill-out tunes, making it a great place for a pre-club tipple, or to impress your date or business client.

Maggie Choo's is the latest creation of the increasingly popular designer Ashley Sutton, the man behind the incredible 'Bookshop' and 'Iron Fairies' bars. Located at the end on Silom road, under the Novotel Fenix Silom and near to the famous 'Sky Bar' at Lebua, Maggie Choo's is both a restaurant and a bar, a place like nothing we have seen before in Bangkok or beyond. If no one told you where it's located, Maggie Choo's is really hard to spot, just a small old wooden Chinese door outside the Novotel and if the staff at the hotel reception didn't point it out to me, I would have missed it entirely. Met Bar

When it first opened in 1998, London's Met Bar became the hottest nighttime haunt west of Ibiza. Now its newest sister, The Met Bar Bangkok, delivers the same for the Asian capital, answering a sophisticated need for privacy and energy in a space reserved for hotel guests and members only (although they are known to be flexible).

At night, it morphs into a sultry, lounge-style members bar with deep chairs and wine-dark walls. Lighting is soft and moody. Bar staff - 'mixologists' - create bespoke Martinis while headline DJs spin worldwide lounge sounds. Drinks start at 200 baht and there's no cover charge. At its busiest and best when hosting an international act or one-off event.
