Khlong Thom Market in Bangkok

Bangkok Markets

Khlong Thom Market, formerly known as 'Flashlight Market' due to the fact that shoppers need a torch to view the goods (when shopping at night), is especially crowded late on Saturday evenings. Jam-packed with motley vendor stalls and displays, the market is best known for its secondhand goods and assorted knick-knacks.

Covering areas of Luang, Worachak and Charoenkrung, Suar Pa Roads, Khlong Thom has everything from spare car parts, DVDs and CDs, electronic devices to clothing items and toys. Besides the roadside stalls, there's also a three-storey Khlong Thom Centre (close to Worachak Road) where car accessories and toys are for sale.

Shopping Experience at Khlong Thom Market

Like a huge shopping mall but with everything laid out in the open and with little or no sense of order, Khlong Thom is an experience that you will either love or hate. Efforts to explore deep into the unknown will be highly rewarded. Down the unfamiliar lanes, you might come across a ‘treasure’ – object that you don’t really need but satisfies your curiosity, whether old toys that have been off shop shelves for years, car stickers or accessories that make an identity statement that is so ‘you’, or a brass lamp that transports you back to the last century.

Not everything is secondhand. Many shops offer brand-new merchandise but usually it’s second-grade or knock-off. For those who find pleasure in obsolete fashion or objects, Khlong Thom is a must-visit.

Khlong Thom Market Highlights

Khlong Thom is also a place where you can do some practical shopping. A haven for hobbyists and amateur inventors, the market offers all kinds of parts and appliances imaginable. Here, you’ll find a wide range of bolts, screws, electrical wires, pulley wheels, water filter parts, model-specific remote controls for a range of appliances, home entertainment equipment, digital cameras, radios, phone chargers and much much more.

There’s also fashion, and some of it is unusual; far from the usual ladies’ wear you often see at other outdoor markets. At Khlong Thom Market, you will find everything from T-shirts and sneakers to party costumes and top-to-toe accessories for all occasions for sale. Party masks range from Halloween to fancy themes. Fake fingers, wigs of all sizes, rubber snakes, false blood, all the way to magic accessories and supplies.

If you want to avoid the crowds, the best time to go is Sunday morning from 8:00 until 11:00. Parking is very limited and expensive, so the best way to get there is by taxi. While at the market, watch your belongings very closely. Wear comfortable clothes and shoes, as well as drink plenty of fluids.
