CentralWorld Convention Centre

CentralWorld Convention Centre

The latest addition to the massive CentralWorld project in the heart of Bangkok, the Bangkok Convention Centre, is another step closer to the big-picture target of creating the city's first, fully integrated and world-class lifestyle destination. Ultimately it will consist of the convention venue, a 505-room luxury hotel, a retail and leisure complex (CentralWorld, already in place), and a few other surprises thrown in...

The Bangkok Convention Centre is a state-of-the-art venue that offers over 17,000 square metres of convention space with a ceiling height of 13.5 metres, as well as the ability to accommodate up to 6,000 delegates in a single pillar-less environment (called the World Ballroom). In addition there are 15 Lotus Suites, ranging in size from 67 to 131 square metres, and a pre-function area of 706 square metres. Visitors can reach the convention centre with escalators from the CentralWorld shopping complex, and there will also be a total of eleven passenger lifts. Other features include several VIP rooms, a hi-tech and fully-equipped Business Centre offering secretarial services and meeting rooms, a media room, and the Lotus Garden - over 1,000 square metres of function space. The first official event to be held here is a Hello Kitty Show, scheduled for early in July.

The show-stopper: A hotel to dazzle and delight

Rising 55 floors, the World Hotel Bangkok is expected to be the real show-stopper with its futuristic design and ultra-modern take on hospitality. Only due to be launched in 2008, the hotel is already the talk of the town as it is slowly taking shape and changing the Bangkok skyline around the Ratchaprasong intersection. General Manager of the World Hotel and Bangkok Convention Centre, Michel Horn, told Bangkok.com that the philosophy behind the massive project has been to create "a complete destination for leisure and pleasure".

The design principles of the hotel were inspired by the elements of 'water', 'fire', 'earth' and 'air' - each of which will be evident in a different design aspect of the hotel's 'blooming lotus' architecture. Arriving at the hotel will be an experience in itself, for example, as much of the outsized lobby's floor will be of a see-through substance - built over an indoor pond. Although much of the detail is still shrouded in secrecy, Michel revealed that the World Hotel's food and beverage outlets are going to raise the bar more that a few notches in the super-sophistication league. Located up on the 55th floor will be two trendy venues offering breathtaking views of the city; one a fine dining restaurant called 55 Rooftop, the other a wine and cocktail bar called RedSky. On the 24th floor, 'Ginger' will specialise in Thai and Japanese cuisine, while guests would be able to enjoy international and Asian delicacies at The World. Other venues will include the Lobby Lounge, Globe Bar (in the Sky Lobby), and a coffee shop cum caf on the lobby ground floor, called Zing.

Taking hospitality in Bangkok to new heights

Every aspect of the World Hotel has been carefully planned and designed to set it apart. Guests will be able to play a game of tennis on the 24th floor - undoubtedly the 'highest' tennis court in Bangkok - where there will also be various kinds of fitness facilities and a world-class, 16-treatment room spa located. Michel - who has more than 20 years experience of the hotel industry in Asia, having been involved in new hotel projects in Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia and Cambodia - speaks with contagious enthusiasm about his latest endeavour. "I am part of something much bigger than just a convention hotel, and it has been a tremendous challenge," he said. "Bangkok is getting very competitive in the international arena, both as a convention hub and as a food destination. The overall lifestyle mix that we will be offering is unique and will be adding value to the city as a whole."

The World Hotel's 505 rooms will be roughly made up as follows: 255 Deluxe World rooms, 75 Superior World rooms, 30 Premium World rooms, 68 Club Deluxe rooms, 27 Club Executive rooms, 14 Club Premium rooms, 30 Junior Suites, 5 Executive Suites, and 1 Royal Suite. Rooms are going to be fabulously decked out in exquisite furnishings and the latest hi-tech features, oozing a chic contemporary feel. Up on the 51st floor is going to be a Club Lounge, and there will also be an impressive Executive Club (Business Centre) offering travelling businessmen the latest and greatest.

The project seems cut out for Michel, who considers himself a 'builder', not a 'house-keeper'. "The challenge lies in creation, and to get it right - the first time. The most important part of any project is the beginning," he added philosophically.
