Shopping for Toys in Bangkok
Shopping in Bangkok is not only limited to adults. Kids, too, are spoilt for choice with an endless plathora of playthings. From sophisticated game consoles like Play Station and Nintendo Wii at Toys 'R' Us to colourful plastic toys in Chinatown, Bangkok has it all! |
|
Undoubtedly the most famous toy shop in the world, Toys 'R' Us has the widest choice when it comes to playthings. With its fourth Bangkok store open at CentralWorld, Toys 'R' Us is becoming a big favourite among kids and parents alike. The shop is sectioned into seven exciting, fun-filled zones. Boys can find their toys in 'Boys Action & Adventure and Auto World', where a wide choice of superhero action figures, remote controlled cars and helicopters, Tamiya race car models, and train sets can be found.
Barbie and stuffed animal lovers head to 'Girl Favourites' for a giddy selection of dolls, plush toys, and kitchen sets. For family fun, all-time favourite board games like Monopoly, Trivial Pursuit, Cluedo and Scrabble are available in Family Fun & Games. Learning can also be fun, especially through toys. Educate and amuse your kids with educational toys like building blocks, electronic learning aids and software, play dough, puzzles, and interactive toys in Education Toys. The hottest electronics, gadgets, gizmos and game consoles (the likes of Playstation, X Box, and Game Boy) are in abundance in the 'R' zone. New-born babies are also well-catered for as 'Babies 'R' Us' stocks everything you'll ever need for the pleasure of your little angels. Other services include an exchange and refund policy, free gift wrapping and Toys 'R' Us gift certificates.

Malls & Department Stores
While most malls have toy shops and children's sections at department stores, the sixth floor of CentralWorld deserves special mention. Dedicated to kids and families, it features toys, supplies, accessories and clothes for little buttons. 'Ovo', 'Milk' and 'Brown Farm' are some of the stores featuring smart gear for kids. The sixth floor is home to the Sylvanian Restaurant, where you can also buy cute stuffed animals and miniature collections from the very extensive Sylvanian collection.
Lego has always been a favourite pursuit among kids, be they boy or girl, old or young. You can find a little Lego land store in Bangkok in the kids department of Isetan at CentralWorld!
Chatuchak Weekend Market
For the child with more specialised tastes, Chatuchak Weekend market is where to find hand-made toys, amazingly realistic plastic miniatures (Thai fruits, food, sushi, you name it), vintage action heroes, fun gardening tools, pet accessories and much more.
Chinatown
The place to come looking for plastic toys galore is Chinatown, of course - mostly the area between Mangkon and Itsaranuphap Streets, just off Yaowarat Street. Fancy dress items prevail - from police uniforms to rubber masks, wigs, tiaras and werewolf outfits, and are especially concentrated around Soi Wanit (Sampeng Lane). There are also loads of haberdashery and bric-a-brac stalls to find items to create your own outrageous costume.
Book Stores
While travelling, there are always those times in between, and it's always a treat for the active mind to have a book to turn to. Numerous bookshops in Bangkok offer dignified collections of literature for young and old alike. 'The Mystery of Bangkok's Golden Treasure' by Jane Puranananda is a volume famous for inspiring international children. Kinokuniya, Asia Books, Bookazine (found in most malls) are a good bet, as well as many of the used-book stores around the Khao San Road area - all brimming with literary treasures.
