Bangkok Rooftop Venues

Bangkok Rooftop Venues

The sheer size and magnitude of this enormous city is best experienced at one of Bangkok's trendy rooftop venues, from where you can enjoy a bird's eye view of this sprawling metropolis while sipping on a refreshing cocktail. The best time to go is late afternoon - just in time to witness the sun setting behind the magnificent Chao Praya River.

Gazebo Sukhumvit and Khao San

Where: Gazebo Sukhumvit and Khao San
Open: 18:00 - late
Dress Code: Smart Casual
Contact: Sukhumvit +66 (0)2 655 2471, Khao San +66 (0)2 629 0705

Welcome to Gazebo; a rooftop bar-cum-club where balmy winds and nocturnal city views mix into a heady cocktail. It's all a little like the entrance to a half-built pleasure palace. Resist the temptation to turn back; views entertain while you sip cocktails in what feels like an upscale Moroccan loft. The plump cushions, the soft lamps, the shisha pipes (and the lack of air-conditioning…) are all heavily redolent of Cairo. Includes ‘The Harem’ – a state-of-the-art DJ room where you can belly dance into the small hours. Gazebo has two branches and both are set on the same theme.

How to get there?
Sukhumvit: If heading past Sukhumvit Soi 1, keep your eyes peeled for the burly bouncers. What lies up the lift, on the fourth floor, is not the sordid joint you were expecting.

Khao San: If you are at the police station on Jakrapong Road in front of Khao San, keep walking toward Ratchadamnoen Road, Gazebo is on your left. Gazebo Khao San is highly rated as one of the Great Bars of the World in Singha-Lonely Planet 2009.

Nest

Where: Le Fenix Hotel Bangkok
Open: 18:00- 02:00
Dress Code: Smart Casual
Contact: +66 (0)2 305 4000

Le Fenix hotel’s rooftop bar ‘The Nest’ is an airy alfresco hangout in downtown Sukhumvit. Its slouch-friendly furnishings, soft beats and sultry evening breezes will ease you ever-so gently into the night, leaving you all set for a crazy night-on-the-tiles at one of the clubs below.

Bed down with your lovebird in a padded hammock or one of the ‘nest’ shaped chairs. Order a tangy cocktail, lean back and take in the blinking cityscape. Or get convivial with the clientele - suits and Thai/farang clubbers mostly - while you puff on a Cuban cigar.

The Long Table

What: The Long Table
Open:  11:00 - 02:00
Dress Code: Smart Casual (no beach wear or flip-flops allowed)
Contact: +66 (0)2 302 2557

Residing on the 25th floor of Column Tower, Long Table is a hidden jewel in Bangkok’s crown. Standing tall over the city, the panoramic view is exasperated by the nostalgic house beats that roll from the glass facade into the night sky. The same group who brought the city Bed Supperclub returned with an even more modern and gimmicky gesture – sharing a meal at one table. Believed to be the longest table in the world, it seats around 70 people. The bar seeks to redefine the dining and drinking experience in Bangkok.

Comprising dimly light hallways, intricate lighting and the clever trickery of mirrors to create the illusion of more space, the décor is a real treat. With such a cutting edge concept you get the feeling that if Long Table were in New York the entry queues would be somewhere over in Sathorn. For those looking for a unique experience, a chic cocktail or chilled glass of wine, Bangkok’s newest rooftop bar will not fail to impress.

Sky Bar & Distil (Sirocco)

A favourite hang-out for celebrities and wannabes, this is where you'd find some of the best live jazz in Bangkok. Also located at the Dome is Distil, another place where everyone likes to be seen. Part DJ bar, part smoking lounge and part restaurant, Distil serves fine single-malt Scotches like Macallan and Glenmoranghie, accompanied by a small carafe of genuine Scottish water.

The oyster bar features fresh, imported oysters, as well as Iranian caviar. If you feel like puffing on a fine Cuban cigar, choose one from the humidor and light up on Bangkok's highest smoking balcony, overlooking the Chao Praya River. Drinks and food might be pricey, but the experience is priceless. Reservations are required for Sirocco.
