Khao San may be famous for the throng of backpackers who start their South-East Asian travels in this corner of Bangkok, but there is so much more to the area than partying on the famous street itself. Situated only a kilometre from the Old Town, it abides by the rules of low-rise housing, walking down the small streets and alleyways can sometimes feel like you have stepped back in time. Well-located for the main attraction and some delicious restaurants, it is only five minutes in a taxi to the Grand Palace and Wat Pho, or jump on a river taxi if you want to explore further.
