THE MONTIEN HOTEL BANGKOK REVIEW

For the past 40 years, the Montien Hotel has been known amongst Bangkok’s business and leisure travellers for its excellent portrayal of traditional Thai hospitality. All 475 rooms and suites are adorned in traditional Thai style, including useful amenities. Conveniently placed on Surawong Road, the Montien is surrounded by a number of nightlife venues due to its close proximity to the infamous Patpong and its eclectic Night Market– home to an abundance of counterfeit goods, amongst other things. While the business district, Silom, is just a few minutes walk from the hotel.

What's it like?

In Thai, the word ‘Montien’ means the royal residence. At first glance, the big white building's exterior might look a bit tired but once you step inside guests are struck by the grandiose lobby and its opulent Thai-style décor, fused with the exquisite attention to detail that Thailand is so renowned for. The grand winding staircase with its adjoining golden banisters instantly catches your eye.

With the high spirits of the traditionally dressed staff who efficiently assisted me through the check-in process, it’s was easy to see why Thailand hails itself as the ‘Land Of Smiles’. The Montien rooms still don’t feature keycards but remain with the ordinary door key attached to a unique bell-keychain which, thankfully, will open room's door regardless of whether it has been placed by your mobile phone or credit card.

Where is it?

Enjoying a prime location, the Montien is situated on Surawong Road running parallel to Silom Road. Approximately ten minutes walk from Sam Yan, Silom MRT and Sala Daeng BTS stations. While Silom, one of Bangkok’s business and night entertainment hubs can be easily accessed by foot through the Taniya and Patpong Streets. A short distance from the area is the Chao Phraya River- just three stations away (Saphan Taksin BTS) while main shopping malls like Siam Paragon, Central World, Siam Discovery, Siam Centre, MBK, and Siam Square are only five minutes (National Stadium, Siam, and Chidlom BTS) via Skytrain.

What are the rooms like?

The Montien Hotel Bangkok has a wide range of room types on offer, ranging from Superior and Executive Rooms (34sqm), Deluxe and Executive Deluxe (56sqm), to the glorious Junior Suite (70sqm) and Imperial Suite (258sqm) Although all interiors are set in a classic Thai theme, the bigger the space the better treats one will have in store – luxury resides in space, after all.  Once inside, teakwood furnishings feature and traditional handicraft-textiles grace the walls, a huge white bed adorned with several intricate cushions in different sizes and shapes will leave guests pining to shut their eyes for a few hours and relax in the comfort of the soft cotton sheets and fluffy pillows.

Fresh tropical Thai fruits are served in a traditional basket as compliments of the hotel, while a double floor-to-ceiling window with mini balcony enjoys pool views, to be enjoyed over a morning coffee or evening beverage.

All guestrooms and suites are fully equipped with standard amenities like television with international and pay-per-view channels, bathroom amenities and hairdryer, electric safety box, working desk with internet access (chargeable per hour), daily English or Japanese newspapers, and the use of the fitness centre and sauna. As mentioned, the bigger the space the better the room experience one is likely to get. Additional services like: private check-in, 20% discount at business centre, late check-out until 18:00 hours and more come with executive rooms and suites guests.

The outdoor swimming pool on the third floor is a good spot for those who love splashing around or wishing to pick up a made-in-Bangkok tan. Cool drinks can be enjoyed at the bar, just a few steps from the pool.
