Ibis Sathorn Bangkok Hotel Review

Sathorn - Bangkok

The Ibis Sathorn provides clean and concise accommodation complemented by attentive service and is in an excellent location. Ideal for both business and leisure travellers, the hotel sits just a ten minute walk from Bangkok’s business district and the shopping haven Suan Lum Night Bazaar. The Ibis scores highly on location, service and comfort, making it a top choice for Bangkok’s budget travellers.

What's it like?

Cheap and cheerful, the Ibis does exactly what it says on the box – it provides quality accommodation at reasonable prices. The no-frills feel of the property offers a refreshing approach to affordable but dependable hospitality. Ibis is clean, compact and comfortable and the décor is contemporary and chic. The Ibis enjoys a convenient location – both central and in close proximity to well-priced restaurants and bars and an excellent tailor.

Where is it?

The Ibis Sathorn is situated just off Sathorn Soi 1 – Sribumphen, the one-time backpacking district and the forerunner of Khao Sarn Road. The area is laid back, a gay friendly zone and was made famous as it featured in the movie 'Good Morning Vietnam'.

Sathorn has a distinct Asian charm about it; you can pretty much do anything here from getting a massage to howling out songs at a karaoke to an all-night drinking session in Wong's, a Bangkok institution – the bar closes when the last person leaves. Suan Lum Night Bazaar and Lumpini Park are opposite and it is a ten-minute walk to Lumpini MRT Station. The entertainment district of Silom, home to renowned Patpong, is a ten-minute cab ride from the hotel.

What are the Rooms like?

The rooms are simple, compact and comfortable. The wooden floors and maroon walls are well balanced against clean lines, with elephant pictures above the beds that emphasise the 'Thainess' of the hotel. Comfortable beds and WiFi (chargable) are convenient for people who like to work in bed, while in the compact bathroom the power shower is a definite bonus and a great wake up tool before going out to face a day in Bangkok.

Each of the 213 rooms at this property is pretty much identical, the only major difference being smoking and non-smoking options. In-room amenities include tea and coffee-making facilities, hair dryer, a fridge and satellite TV.

Restaurants & Bars

The hotel has a cool and cosy bar where draft beer and free internet are provided so enjoying a drink and having a snack while surfing the web is an easy option. The outdoor terrace is a great place to enjoy an early evening drink and to watch the day draw to a close sipping on a delicious banana and honey smoothie. The modern canteen-style restaurant is minimalist and in direct contrast to the eclectic menu that features Thai and international treats.

Leisure Facilities

The Ibis doesn’t have much in the way of leisure facilities, but what it lacks in recreational choices it makes up with location. A two-minute walk away is the serviced apartment Pantip Court which has a well-sized swimming pool, sunbathing space and fitness centre and the general area is well served by international restaurants and quaint drinking holes.

Business Facilities

The hotel provides business and conference facilities to cater to over 30 people. These facilities include Wifi and projectors.

The Verdict

The Ibis Sathorn is a great choice for anyone on a stopgap in Bangkok. It is clean, comfortable, contemporary and convenient. The beauty of the hotel's location is that it offers an insight into life in Bangkok beyond the main streets and bustling shopping areas, while still offering easy access to the city. The hotel staff members were gracious and eager to ensure that my stay ran as smoothly as possible. With great food, comfortable beds and free WiFi, the Ibis definitely stands out as a reliable hospitality brand that you can count on time and time again.
