RAMADA PLAZA MENAM RIVERSIDE HOTEL REVIEW

This hotel excels in offering a charming east-meets-west experience. Fusing elements of traditional Thai decor with an ultra-modern design concept, the hotel succeeds in bridging the gap between old and new world Thailand.

The beauty of this property lies within a number of factors; primarily the jaw dropping location. Set on the banks of the Chao Phraya River, guests can observe day-to-day life on the River. Team this with providing a cost effective five-star experience, and you are on to a winner.

What's it like?

The Ramada Plaza Menam's concept seeks to bridge the gap between five-star accommodation and rates that don’t break the bank. The hotel has recently undergone a massive re-branding exercise, revamping everything from room interiors to the food and beverage outlets. Fusing traditional Siamese design with a contemporary edge, the property secures the right balance between old and new Thailand.

The hotel comes highly recommended to those who want to experience the many faces of Bangkok. Close enough to attractions, its location is well cut off from the hustle and bustle of the city centre, offering an up-scale urban retreat equipped with a host of amenities, services and facilities, to ensure your every whim is catered for. Combine gracious service, practical living spaces and a wealth of recreational choices, and you get the Ramada Plaza.

Where is it?

The hotel scores highly on location, situated on the River of Kings – The Chao Phraya, this is the 'real' Bangkok. Reached easiest by complimentary river taxi, the staton is a two-minute walk from Saphin Taksin BTS. From here, shopping destinations and entertainment districts are easily accessed.

The city’s most revered attractions such as the Grand Palace and historic temples can be reached by boat transfers, arranged from within the hotel. The Ramada is based in a predominantly Chinese-Thai and Indian area, so there are many eateries and interesting shops selling various apparels, within walking distance.

What are the Rooms like?

Featuring 525 recently refurbished guestrooms, the Ramada is well-equipped to provide rooms that tailor to a wide range of needs and wants, including disabled accommodation.

Standard functions in all rooms include seating areas, en-suite bathrooms, WiFi connection and international TV channels. The Deluxe-River/Pool view rooms have Thai-inspired interiors, combining bold fabrics with practical amenities, including WiFi. This grade of room excels in providing a homely space accompanied by a desirable view.

The Grand Deluxe Rooms are 42sqm and have also been designed to accommodate wheelchair users. Each room features a view of the river and continues with the Siamese-themed interior. The perfect choice for a lengthy stay in Bangkok.

The Plaza and Royal Thai Suites have either one or two bedrooms and are perfect for family vacations. Inclusive of living, seating and sleeping areas, luxury fused with practicality is of the essence. The spacious, marble-floored bathrooms feature both showers and extensively sized bathtubs. Modern amenities for guest enjoyment include CD players, digital safes, hairdryers and IDD telephone.

Restaurants & Bars

The Terrace @ 72 Restaurant & Bar

Consisting of five different concepts, set over a space of 1,500sqm the Terrace @ 72 & bar is what earns this property its stripes. The contemporary take on hospitality uses lighting arrangements to clever effect and a bold colour scheme, but it is the riverside location that puts this venue right up there with its competitors over at the Oriental and Peninsular.

The clever positioning of the restaurant and bar is best appreciated when sitting out on the terrace enjoying the live entertainment, after sampling the buffet spread; which delves into a range of international cuisines.

Coconut Terrace

Surrounded by lush tropical greenery and with a view looking directly onto the pool, the Coconut Terrace is a popular for a midday drink or morning coffee. Serving light refreshments, lunch is a light and breezy affair. Sala Thai and Pool bar A teakwood pool bar where light snacks and chilled drinks can be enjoyed before a pool setting. The perfect choice to relax after a few laps in the pool.

Neo Lounge

Neo Lounge

An ultra-modern drinks lounge open for evening cocktails or a glass of white or red from the extensive wine list.

Dessert Dream bakery

This is a real treat for those with a sweet tooth. Pastries, cookies, cakes and chocolates are the perfect complement to a day among the sois, sounds and sights of Bangkok.

Menam Cocktail Cruise

This is an experience not to be missed by any visitor to Bangkok. Organised from within the hotel, the cocktail cruise is a pure delight, comprising spectacular scenery, exotic drinks and light nibbles.

Leisure Facilities

The hotel has an extensive swimming pool surrounded by teakwood furnishings and lush, tropical vegetation; guests more often than not feel like they are lounging on a remote island rather than in the middle of the sprawling metropolis that is Bangkok. The Beauty Salon is a great place to spruce up for a night out or an organized boat cruise along the river.

Other services at the hotel include a currency exchange, gift shop, tailor and tour counter. The Ramda really leaves no stone unturned when it comes to covering all the requirements needed to ensure a comfortable and convenient stay. The hotel is in the process of developing a floor dedicated to spa treatments and fitness.

Business Facilities

Due to the grand scale of the hotel, it is a popular choice of venue for both business and social functions. During my stay a Thai wedding celebration was taking place with no particular disruption incurred. Indeed, the beauty of the hotel is that it is big enough to have your own private party and cause no disturbance to the hotel guests, or vice versa.

The private air-conditioned rooms cater for from 15 to 650 persons, while the open-air terrace can deal with up to 1,000 people. In total there are a choice of 22 air-conditioned function and break-out rooms, for business and conference meetings.

The Verdict

The Ramada Plaza is a unique find in a city jam packed with properties. The innovative idea of creating a hotel that offers a five-star experience at affordable cost is surely a concept that will catch on. The experienced staff obviously have led long careers in hospitality, as they anticipate your every whim.

The interior skillfully pays homage to traditional Thai design while still retaining an air of modernity. Topped off by great food outlets that cater to a range of food choices and world-class facilities, the opening of the spa and fitness floor will be the perfect finish to a truly enjoyable hotel.
