What’s it like?

Opened in 2008, Park Plaza Sukhumvit Bangkok is the first Park Plaza in Thailand from over 30 hotels worldwide. At first glance, this medium-size hotel’s exterior is reminiscent of serviced residences in Manhattan, NYC. Apart from the outstanding design and modern décor throughout the lobby area, its service is second to none. Staff members at Park Plaza are friendly, attentive to details, and more than helpful. I asked the receptionist for direction to certain nearby attractions. Besides insightful and useful answers, he suggested the best way to get there. I was impressed.

Where is it?

Although the street address claims that the hotel is located on lengthy Ratchadapisek Road, Park Plaza is practically located in the Sukhumvit area. If you're taking a taxi, tell the driver that the hotel is located close to Asok intersection and is on the same side of the road as Queen Sirikit National Convention Centre. Otherwise, Asok BTS (Skytrain) and Sukhumvit MRT (Underground) stations are only a short walk from the hotel – very convenient.

The hotel is close to the Stock Exchange of Thailand, the popular Long Table restaurant and bar, seven floors of shoppers' paradise – The Emporium, as well as some of Sukhumvit's vibrant nightclubs and hot spots.

What are the Rooms like?

Park Plaza offers contemporary Superior (60 rooms, 30sqm) and Deluxe (36 rooms, 42sqm) rooms. All rooms are tastefully decorated and equipped with state-of-the-art amenities. These include free WiFi access, 32" flat screen TV's and DVD players, IDD phone, iron/ironing board, refrigerator, mini-bar, and a big laptop-size electronic safety box.

The room is modern and spacious while the walls are decked out with contemporary art paintings. An ergonomic chair was so comfortable that I ended up sitting there for hours watching a movie while also surfing the internet.

Next to an extra large king-size bed with a sumptuous double mattress, there is a pillow menu for guests to select from. Choices of pillows include buckwheat-hulls, allergen-free feather and more. The room features a pleasant view of modern Bangkok and though my room faced the bustle of Ratchadapisek Road, I had no trouble getting a good night's sleep because of the peace and quiet the double-glazed windows afford.

The superb bathroom is enclosed in reinforced glass, has a powerful rain shower and a specially designed metal appendage to hang towels on. A built-in hair dryer is safely set in a drawer under the basin. The toiletries include natural virgin oils, homemade soaps with choices of honey with tiger herbs, bamboo charcoal with honey, and radish wooden smoke – and all are an excellent source of vitamin and natural sources.

Restaurant & Bar

Located on the second floor, CO2 is an open-kitchen restaurant and a chill-out lounge offering a delightful mix of Mediterranean and Thai classic dishes as well as an exotic list of refreshment and alcoholic beverages in a laid-back dining atmosphere. And if you wish to have a private dining area, the restaurant offers an exclusive space that can accommodate up to 10 seats.

Also, CO2 provides a 24/7 open and complimentary bar of coffees, espresso, lattes, refreshments, and light snacks. I took some cookies and peanuts back to my room and enjoyed them while watching HBO late at night.

Facilities

Park Plaza has a fully equipped fitness centre on the 16th floor for those who love exercising on a regular basis. The rooftop swimming pool offers magnificent views of Sukhumvit high-rises and Benjakitti Park. Only a few steps from the fitness room, the pool features a deck with sun loungers and patios for relaxation.

The Verdict

Covering all details, Park Plaza is located in a great location and provides amenities and services beyond expectations. Staying at Park Plaza was an unforgettable experience.
