Classic hospitality values meet modern decor and hi-tech trends
The days of location, function, comfort, style and convenience being the principle parameters in hospitality design are long gone. The advent of technological advancements, increased consumer sophistication (taste) and design aesthetics have paved the way for a new breed of contemporary hotels that meet the needs and aspirations of modern-day travelers. One of the latest additions to Bangkok's growing number of trendy, 'new age' establishments is the 36-storey Grand Sukhumvit by Sofitel; a successful fusion of classic hospitality values, hi-tech features and chic, contemporary d-cor trends.
Sukhumvit Road is littered with malls, shops, clubs, bars, entertainment choices and a never-ending list of Asian and International restaurants that will please the most discerning connoisseur; steadily establishing its status as one of Bangkok's prime and most popular areas. The skytrain (BTS) route along this bustling road makes all of its offerings easily accessible. It's also a gateway to the rest of the city and its other attractions, with an underground connection at Asoke. Tucked into Soi (street) 6, a 100-metre stroll from Nana BTS station, the stylish two towers of the Grand Sukhumvit by Sofitel can indeed boast a great location. Close enough to the 'action' - yet, removed from it too at a comfortable distance. Oh, and Bangkok's new Suvarnabhumi International Airport is just 30 minutes away on the Expressway.
Functional design in a hi-tech age
Consisting of 128 luxurious rooms and 239 fully equipped one- and two-bedroom apartments, the modern d-cor is striking and soothing at the same time. Dark earth tones are accentuated with and contrasted by muted colours, interesting textures and a feeling of warmth, comfort and 'home' created by scatter cushions, decorative ceramics and furnishings upholstered in rich textiles. The interesting shapes and generous dimensions of all the rooms - moving away from the 'matchbox' genre - makes for a living space that feels more like an apartment than a hotel room. Indeed, guest rooms offer 'a 21st Century Thai experience', just like the promotional material says.

On the hi-tech front, guest rooms don't disappoint either. With large LCD screens offering a choice of satellite and cable channels, a broadband data port connection, IDD phone and user-friendly environment control features for lighting and air-conditioning, no expenses were spared in bringing guests the latest technological conveniences. Hats off and a big thank you to the designers for the adjustable reading lights - a refreshing and rare feature that is (surprisingly and conspicuously) missing in many upmarket hotels. The bathrooms were designed with an equally modern approach; clinical, spacious and luxurious with a separate bath tub and shower cubicle, telephone handset and all the normal trimmings (except for a bidet or related facilities).
It's all coming together
Minor teething problems are inevitable with the opening of a new hotel, but assistance is away at the press of a single-digit guest enquiry service - answered after only two rings by a very helpful and efficient client service attendant. The Business Centre and Spa will be completed in August (2006), and bar fridges can be stocked on request. The gracious and efficient manner in which staff handled queries made up for these minor little shortcomings.
Add-ons that make all the difference
There certainly was no shortcomings at breakfast; a sumptuous affair served at Caf- de Nimes with its French Mediterranean accents, one of two world-class restaurants. The other, Bonbon, is a deluxe delicatessen - the ideal place to savour some gourmet delights like pastries, imported cheeses, goose liver terrine and caviar. Two bars, Aziza and Petrus, offer the ideal setting to enjoy delicious tropical cocktails. During the day, Petrus doubles as a business lounge, and becomes a lively nightspot from 19:30 onwards with music provided by the hotel's resident band. Throughout these venues and public areas, the latest d-cor trends are mirrored and wireless Internet is available.

What the compact Fitness Centre lacks in size is made up by an impressive collection of state-of-the-art exercise equipment. Personal trainers are knowledgeable and a feast for the eyes - just the kind of motivation required to start peddling vigorously on that space-aged-looking exercise bike. The swimming pool somewhat resembles a theme park pool with fun, over-the-top design and architectural features; its inviting azure water offering a very tempting seduction to make a splash.
Overall, the Grand Sukhumvit by Sofitel is designed to please travelers with a taste for the contemporary; a comfortable, convenient and value-for-money retreat to let your hair down in between making the most of your stay in the Thai capital.
