Bed Supperclub Bangkok

Sukhumvit - Bangkok

Bed Supperclub

Bed Supperclub's tubular elliptical structure, sleek white space-pod interiors, exquisite restaurant and house and electro DJs makes for perhaps Bangkok's trendiest, most sophisticated club. Changing the dimension of the traditional dining experience, the venue is an amalgamation of a restaurant, club, art gallery, and theatre.

To characterize it in three words, it's 'interactive', 'subversive' and 'comfortable'. Billed as a ‘stage gallery’, the dining concept brings together bed and food, in an über-stylish setting. The bottom line is that the restaurant does not succumb to the notion of style over substance. The food is exceptional and the atmosphere and décor simply complement it, as a great wine does.

Where is Bed Supperclub?

At the bottom end of Sukhumvit Soi 11 (home to many of Bangkok’s coolest clubs, hotels and restaurants). It's quite literally impossible to miss. The capsule-shaped exterior is like no other piece of design in Thailand and quite possibly the world.

The best way to reach the venue is either by taxi (simply ask the taxi driver to take you to Sukhumvit 'sip ed') or via BTS getting off at Nana, leave through the first exit on the left-hand side and then walk 300 metres down the street.

Bed Supperclub Décor

In terms of aesthetic innovativeness and originality, no other venue in Bangkok touches Bed Supperclub. The décor is stark white, with bursts of colour in the form of lighting contributing to an overriding futuristic feel. On entering you will feel as though you are boarding a spaceship, the padded sliding door which separates the club from the restaurant merely amplifies this Jetson-esque vibe.

Supperclub splits into two tiers that fringe the open space in the middle of the room. This turns later into a dance floor but during dinner it is used as a performance space. The beds are spacious and luxuriant with crisp white linen and super soft pillows, perfect for relaxation during your meal. Whip your shoes off and make yourself comfortable in whatever way you feel fit.

There is a huge element of experimental design with this venue that involves the customer on another level. The white backdrop works to enhance the presence of guests beyond that of being a paying customer, the interior works like a canvas and everything that happens within the club reflects the art that fills it.

Bed Supperclub Atmosphere

Bed Supperclub is super cool – it clearly prides itself on being one of the world's leading design venues, the first nightlife port of call for many when they arrive in Bangkok – and it's easy to see why. The DJ's chilled-out house beats provide the perfect background music to sit and chat, watch the entertainment or discover the best happenings in the form of events and exhibitions on the projector screen. Patrons can also have a massage from the in-house masseuse, a nice touch after filling up on the delicious food.

Now you might be thinking that this all seems a bit too much. The beauty of all this entertainment is that it’s incredibly subtle, getting involved is definitely the guests' prerogative.

Food at Bed Supperclub

The menu, as well as the performance theme, changes every two weeks while weekends also offer a different menu. Fusing western dishes with Thai flavours, Executive Chef Paul Hutt has a distinctly contemporary approach to food, in which he seeks to combine seasonal, fresh and local produce to create explosive dishes that will have your taste buds doing a paso doble.

The small red-leather cased menus feature three starters, six mains and three desserts. To start we opt for the poached chicken breast with coriander and cucumber salsa and garlic spring onion sauce, the most Thai-influenced offering on the list. Well presented, it's a great teaser before our main course. The simple ingredients ensure that the after taste does not conflict with the ensuing dish.

For our main we decide on the crispy soft shell crab with warm rice noodles, palm and green mango salad, tangerine vinaigrette and puffed rice. Sounds good? Funnily enough, it is. The crab is exceedingly tasty and being soft shelled there's no power struggle involved. Perfectly complemented by rice noodles and vinaigrette, a variety of textures and flavours ensure thorough satisfaction.

After a palate-cleansing pineapple sorbet we embark on the culinary highlight of the evening, dessert. I go for the lemon curd cheese cake with blueberry ice cream and sweet potato puffs, in my opinion this is obviously where chef Paul earns his reputation as 'One of the most inventive chefs in Southeast Asia' (Conde Nast Traveler 2006). The other option we go for is a warm chocolate filo with maple ice cream, candied pistachio and fairy floss, which is equally as pleasing – the perfect end to a memorable evening.

Service

The beauty of Bed Supperclub is that, unlike many venues of this calibre, it is not snooty; it has a refreshingly open and warm atmosphere. The wait staff is genuinely helpful and does its best to make the whole experience memorable. Attentive and all smiles, food and drink are delivered in a graceful and punctual manner. Adorned in traditional Thai dress and sporting the famous Thailand smile, the wait staff couldn't have been friendlier. Our food and drink was served punctually with enough time in between courses, which added to the whole Face experience.
