The Old City is not big on conventional modern-day shopping opportunities, but (rather fittingly to its character) there are some great markets to explore. Banglamphu Market extends over Chakraphong, Phra Sumen, Tanao and Rambuttri Roads, and is especially good for cheap garments, shirts, jeans, shoes, cosmetics, fashion accessories and trinkets.
A big highlight is Pak Khlong Talad, the famous flower market. This is where farmers from the city outskirts and surrounding areas congregate to sell their fruit, vegetables and flowers from midnight until sunrise, seven days per week - and definitely an excursion worth staying up for.
To kill time, the nightly market under the bridge next to the flower market has been growing steadily in size and the variety of goods on offer. Head to Khao San Road for beachware and anything else the blissed-out, budget traveller could want - from plane tickets and second hand books to morning-after pills (read more about shopping in Khao San Road).
