Where and What to Eat in Pratunam

You're in Bangkok, so eating experiences are all around you. Even on the pavement. Apart from street vendors, choices vary between Thai and international restaurants at hotels, food courts (the ones in Pantip Plaza, Platinum Fashion Mall and CentralWorld are especially good), and all kinds of little restaurants abound.

As mentioned earlier, Pratunam is particularly popular with Indian, Middle Eastern and African traders. As such, the area is home to several Halaal restaurants, and Bangkok's only African restaurant called Abyssenia.

Henry J Beans Bar and Grill

For a delicious steak or giant rack of ribs, Henry J Beans is a classic all-American bar and restaurant. It isn’t the cheapest place to eat but the portions are massive and really deliver with high quality ingredients. The restaurant is located underneath the Amari Watergate Hotel, opening at 17:00 and carrying on until 01:00 in the morning. As well as belly busting grilled dishes, there is live music from 21:00 (except Sunday) and an impressive range of cocktails. The dark polished wood interior, live sports on TV and high chairs surrounding the bar are all tried and tested elements of Americana that is unlike anything else in Pratunam.

Kai Ton Pratunam

With over 40 years of experience, Kai Ton Pratunam serves arguably the best khao man kai (chicken rice) in Bangkok. The popular khao man kai consists of well-boiled and grilled chicken (you can mix both kinds on the same dish) on top of rice. Its side dishes are a garnish of cucumbers, fresh coriander, chicken blood tofu, along with a tasty dipping sauce made of tauchu (also known as yellow soybean paste) with bite-sized ginger portions, and a bowl of clear chicken broth – filling and very tasty.

Krua Aroi

Krua Aroi is a family run restaurant that specialises in classic Thai dishes. Located on Phetchaburi Soi 30, opposite CentralWorld and just before the bridge over the canal, there is a neighbourhood feel to this small restaurant that is reflected in the powerful and authentic food. Often packed with locals, few foreigners find their way to Krua Aroi, which is a shame because it’s a great example of a local Thai joint serving tasty, inexpensive food. The menu is translated into English so ordering is no problem despite the rudimentary English skills of the staff. Find Krua Aroi by looking for the currency exchange shop Super Rich.

  • Opening Hours: 11:00 – 21:00
  • Location: Phetchaburi Soi 30 (walk until you reach the ‘T’ junction. Restaurant is just on your left).

New Mabuhay

For something a little different we recommend lunch or dinner at the only dedicated Filipino restaurant in Bangkok: New Mabuhay. ‘Mabuhay’ means ‘welcome’ in the Philippines and a warm atmosphere is what you can expect at this ground floor restaurant on a small side street off Petchaburi Soi 19. The owner, Miss Delia ‘Pinky’ is always on hand to recommend authentic Filipino specialities such as the delicious Kaldertang Baka, a beef and vegetable dish that is rich and flavoursome but without any spice, and fried crispy pork called Leehon Kawali. The interior of the restaurant is cosy with a yellow and red colour scheme and decorative parasols adding an interesting touch. Dishes cost in the region of 200 baht so a meal here is both unique and great value. There is also a small mini mart onsite, selling Filipino groceries and freshly baked treats such as coconut bread.

  • Opening Hours: 08:30 – 22:00
  • Address: 1/31 Petchaburi Road Soi 19 (take the first left from the entrance of Petchaburi Road Soi 19, the restaurant is a few metres down)

The Curry Pot

Indian cuisine is by far the most represented type of food in Pratunam so finding a restaurant isn’t an issue. The biggest problem is the amount of generic, run-of-the-mill places that pop up just to cash in on tourists. Our recommendation is The Curry Pot; located only a few steps from Baiyoke Tower. It is a large restaurant and easy to find. The decor is a little staid but the delicious curries, tandoori meats and seafood are amongst the best in the area. The menu is extensive with north Indian, south Indian, Iranian and Arabic, vegetarian and seafood sections. For those who want a superb curry, the mutton vindaloo is a spicy and tangy option served with potatoes for 240 baht, and for vegetarians, the paneer makhanwala is cubes of soft cheese sautéed with tomato puree for 140 baht. There is also a seafood menu with barbecued lobster, banana prawns, scallops and crab all available.
