If you can find some free time in between the shopping, or need a break away for variation, Pratunam has a few highlights to include on your itinerary. Just make sure you choose a smog-free day or time in Bangkok to venture up to the 77th observation floor and 84th floor revolving, open-air viewing deck of Baiyoke Sky Hotel for mesmerizing city vistas and great photo opportunities.
Open from 10:00 - 22:00, it's worth forking out the 200 baht admission fee. As can be expected, you can see forever on a clear day, and this vantage point is one of Pratunam's star attractions. There's a restaurant up there too, aptly named Sky Restaurant, where you can enjoy a scrumptious buffet for lunch or dinner. Or drinks at the bar, particularly recommended for sensational sunset views.
Located on Si Ayutthaya Road, a ten-minute tuk-tuk or taxi ride from the centre of Pratunam, Suan Pakkard Palace is a complex of five antique Thai-style houses set in a beautiful garden. It houses an important collection of Asian antiques, and the lacquer pavilion which is decorated with a late Ayutthaya period gold leaf mural is especially noteworthy.
There is also a Khon Museum where masks and costumes of the classical play are on display. Admission is 100 baht, and it is open from 09:00 to 16:00. Other than that, keep your eyes peeled for turn-of-the-century shophouses in some of the smaller 'sois' (alleys) - the main market itself dates back more than a hundred years - and several small shrines and spirit houses. For the supersticious Thais, it is vital to ensure that the spirits are appeased, so that trade remains brisk at any given time.
