What to See in Pratunam

If you can find some free time in between the shopping, or need a break away for variation, Pratunam has a few highlights to include on your itinerary. Just make sure you choose a smog-free day or time in Bangkok to venture up to the 77th observation floor and 84th floor revolving, open-air viewing deck of Baiyoke Sky Hotel for mesmerizing city vistas and great photo opportunities. Also, be sure to visit an antique Thai-style house set in a beautiful garden - Suan Pakkard Palace.

Other than that, keep your eyes peeled for turn-of-the-century shophouses in some of the smaller 'sois' (alleys) - the main market itself dates back more than a hundred years - and several small shrines and spirit houses. For the supersticious Thais, it is vital to ensure that the spirits are appeased, so that trade remains brisk at any given time.

Suan Pakkard Palace

Located on Si Ayutthaya Road, a ten-minute tuk-tuk or taxi ride from the centre of Pratunam, Suan Pakkard Palace is a complex of five antique Thai-style houses set in a beautiful garden. It houses an important collection of Asian antiques, and the lacquer pavilion which is decorated with a late Ayutthaya period gold leaf mural is especially noteworthy. Pantip Plaza

The mother of all IT shops, the entirety of Pantip Plaza is dedicated to computer and technology items. The multistory shopping centre on Petchaburi Road offers a wide selection of stores, selling everything from computers and computer-related accessories, including; parts, printers, digital cameras, MP3 players, PDAs, and much more. Baiyoke Sky Tower

Open from 10:00 - 22:00, it's worth forking out the 200 baht admission fee. As can be expected, you can see forever on a clear day, and this vantage point is one of Pratunam's star attractions. There's a restaurant up there too, aptly named Sky Restaurant, where you can enjoy a scrumptious buffet for lunch or dinner. Or drinks at the bar, particularly recommended for sensational sunset views.

Platinum Fashion Mall Bangkok

A relatively new shopping center, Platinum Fashion Mall caters especially to wholesale clothing, selling a similar range of clothing to the Pratunam Market across the street, except in air-conditioned comfort. The mall has six floors which are filled with small outlets - most of them specialising in women's clothing and fashion accessories. Since this is a wholesale mall, you can get items at very reasonable prices - provided you buy larger quantities, usually three items and up.

The price you pay will be about 30% lower per piece. Some shops allow you to mix different types of items, for example, purses and bags, shirts and trousers. And as with most shopping malls in the city, there is also a food court on the fifth floor, along with cafs and fast food chains. If you're coming from CentralWorld, you shouldn't have any trouble finding it. Just head north, cross the small canal, and turn left into Petchburi Road, a few metres along and you're there.

Pratunam Market

Located at the intersection of Ratchaprop and Petchburi roads, Pratunam Market is one of Bangkok's major markets, selling clothes, shoes, and fashion accessories at wholesale prices. Entry the small alleys and jam-packed small streets and you will find yourself in the middle of a clothe-maze. Shops and tiny stalls dotted on both sides displaying all kind (literally) of clothes from; shorts, t-shirts, formal evening, suits, winter jackets or even bizarre outfits and fancy dress. Bargaining at the market is acceptable, though you barely need to – they’re already cheap.
