If the riverside traces Bangkok's rich historical roots, Ploenchit Road, Chitlom, Ratchadamri, Lang Suan and Wireless Road represent the new face of Bangkok.
Shaped by high rise offices, upscale apartments, embassies, expensive shopping malls and luxury hotels, the area is low on traditional tourist attractions (other than several popular shrines), but high on chic and prestige. During the day, it's mostly about shopping of the designer, status-symbol variety. Food courts adjoining these ritzy malls and a slew of quality restaurants, also do a brisk trade.
The City's Prestigious Address
At night it lacks the raucous buzz of say Sukhumvit or Silom, but more than makes up for it with sophistication. Think jazz-filled hotel lounges, chic tucked-away bars, fine spaces to wine and dine with friends, lovers or family (see Thailand Tatler's Ploenchit restaurant reviews for ideas). Some of Bangkok's most prestigious addresses including Wireless Road (many major embassies including the US Embassy are located here), Ratchadamri and Langsuan are close by.
With Silom and Siam flanking it on one side, and Sukhumvit Road on the other, this area is particularly central for exploring Bangkok. And, with both Skytrain and underground stations covering it, it's pretty easy to get around. |
