Bangkok Tailor for Bespoke Suits - Universal Tailors
One of the best tailors in Bangkok, Thailand
Universal Tailors is a bespoke tailor in Silom creating custom made suits in Bangkok, delivering tailored garments with personalised touches and fantastic service. They offer a range of fabrics from cotton blends right through to some of the most prestigious mills, including Ermengildo Zegna and Vitale Barberis Canonico. There are enough tailors in Bangkok to fill a telephone directory so trying to find a high quality establishment you can be sure to trust is difficult. However, there are a select group tailors out there who deliver consistently impressive results that would stand up against any custom-made garments made in the fashion centres of Europe. We have tried many and Universal Tailors is one of the best bespoke tailors in Bangkok.
At Universal Tailors the customer receives exactly what is requested and the knowledgeable owner, Mr. Ronnie, will help point out small improvements that customers might not even notice. With prices starting at 9,500 baht for a tailored suit and 1,500 baht for a premium cotton shirt, it is clear Universal Tailors offers incredible value for money and during almost 30 years of business – delivering consistently high quality, bespoke tailoring – Universal Tailors is now widely considered to be in the top class of tailors in Bangkok.
We asked Mr. Ronnie of Universal Tailors a few questions to find out more
How long does it take you to tailor a shirt/suit and how many fittings do you recommend to your clients?
If someone is in a real rush, how quickly can you tailor a shirt/suit?
We need at least 2.5 days for the suit and shirt to be ready. We prefer not to be rush and the clients should be available for multiple fittings otherwise the order would not be accepted. We are not the 24 hour turnaround tailors that you find on every street corner: perfection requires time.
Please provide a list of basic prices: shirt price range, suit price range, combo package.
The price for shirts starts from 1,500 baht for premium cotton fabrics and range higher for luxury 2 ply and Egyptian cotton. For suits, the price costs from 9,500 baht for superfine wool blend fabrics and range higher for pure wool and Italian milled fabric. Fabrics from the most prestigious wool mills like Zegna, Vitale Barberis Canonico or Dormeuil are also available for a higher price. As professional tailors we do not believe in bargaining but as a courtesy we do give away a silk tie with each suit order. However, if more than 2 or 3 suits are purchased, we are kind enough to throw in a shirt or two.
Does Universal Tailors have any special fabrics/techniques/customer services that makes it stand out from the crowd?
Universal Tailors differentiates from other tailors by its workmanship. Only pure horsehair interlining or canvas is used for the construction of suits and Bemberg lining is used to ensure the suit is breathable. Shirts are all double stitched and come with real mother of pearl buttons. The staff are immensely polite and friendly. The customer is first greeted with a smile and offered a drink as soon as he enters the store. He is shown the various fabrics in store and in swatches (more than thousand fabrics) and all the customization and style options are discussed. Basically, customer gets the full bespoke experience.
How did you first become interested in tailoring?
When I was 20 years old I worked at my uncle’s store. Back then, tailoring just started in Bangkok and the blossoming tourism trade made sure the business became profitable and popular in short span of time. The excitement of meeting people from different walks of life and countries enticed me to start my own store, and Universal Tailors has been in business since 1985.
What changes have you seen in men's tailoring in the last 30 years?
People are becoming increasing cautious about their suits. Most of the clients now prefer the slim suit and two button jackets. Three button jackets, which used to be worn are now out of fashion. Pinstripes and chalk stripe fabric are also out of trend as most of them prefer self stripes, plain or sharkskin. Basically, people now know a lot about suits and often get photographs of celebrity suits to replicate. Our customers come from all over the world and through them we often learn something new about the latest styles.
How can you tell which tailors are offering quality and which are trying to take advantage of people with little knowledge of the tailoring industry?
You can differentiate a tailor from the price of his suits. For $100 you cannot expect to get a wool suit. It is most likely to be a polyester suit (Do a burn test. If it’s wool then it will smell like burning hair. If you see black smoke and it melts rather than burns, it is polyester). Wool is made of natural fibres which insulates. This means that in hot weather it keeps body cool and in cold weather it keeps the body warm. Secondly, do not fall for the 24 hour turnaround tailor who is likely to fail to get the perfect fit.
