With a relaxed poolside atmosphere set amongst tropical trees and dimmed lights, The Sala Restaurant in the Sheraton Grande Sukhumvit Hotel is a blissful escape from Sukhumvit Road and hectic Bangkok city life. Their Barbeque under the Stars al fresco dining concept doesn’t run all year; instead, it is a seasonal event that takes place through the drier, cooler months – typically from December to March. For the set price of 1,200 baht (not including tax or service charge), diners are treated to a buffet of appetizers, a choice of two from eleven barbequed main dishes, and for dessert, a variety of tropical fruits, ice cream and mango and sticky rice.
The barbeque selections on offer are a hand-picked selection of world cuisine and varied enough to please even the most particular of diners. There are prawn, chicken and cheese paneer tandoori dishes, cooked authentically in a tandoori oven, creamy Lebanese chicken served with mint jelly, thick cut tenderloin steak, lamb chops and a three sausage medley. The fish options are no less impressive, the sizeable cuts of tuna, salmon fillet and sea bass are freshly delivered, as is the final option of a skewered seafood kebab. All choices are cooked to order and come with vegetables and your choice of potato, fries or curly fries. A nice addition is the chance to switch your barbeque options to the Premium Menu, which includes world-renowned favourites such as Kurobuta pork, wagyu beef and Boston lobster. If you decide to order from the Premium Menu, the price is dependent on your selection and does not include a second choice.

The quality of the meat and fish is of the standard you would expect from a five-star Sheraton restaurant and the size of each portion is remarkable. Even the largest appetites will be appeased here...and that’s not even considering the buffet. The choice of appetizers alone offers a notable range of world cuisine: smoked salmon, Caprese tomato and mozzarella bites, cold cuts of salami and chorizo, a salad bar, Thai style seafood salad with shrimp, mussels and squid, and – my personal favourite – spicy wing-bean salad. Similarly, the dessert selection is comprehensive with eight flavours of premium ice cream – including zesty lemon sorbet, mango, and coconut – to choose from. Fresh mango with sticky rice, coconut cream and sesame seeds provides a classic end to a Thai gourmet feast.
The ochre tiles, classical-inspired murals and a traditional Thai styled pavilion at The Sala Restaurant create an old-world ambiance free from modern distractions, and although the open buffet style lacks the elegance of fine-dining, the quality of the produce and size of the portions make this an excellent option after a day of sightseeing when you have some hungry bellies to fill. The Sheraton Grand Sukhumvit Hotel is connected to the BTS at Asok (exit 2) and is only a few metres from busy Asok junction, but when you are sat around the classically-designed pool at The Sala Restaurant, you would never guess. When the hustle and bustle of downtown Bangkok becomes too much, the tree-lined oasis of Sheraton Hotel’s Barbeque under the Stars is a welcome retreat.
