Roof 409 Bangkok may just be one of our new favourite places to drink in Chidlom, opening-up at the start of 2015 on top Mercury Ville’s additional fourth floor. Occupying a pretty elevated terrace space right next to Bangkok’s Skytrain, this stylish bar and restaurant is a great place to enjoy a wide range of imported beers, signature cocktails and modern, French-inspired bistro dishes.

Although only a few floors up, the views from the swanky terrace area are made all the more impressive thanks to the close proximity of the BTS Skytrain, which rattles past every couple of minutes - perfect for an Instagram-worthy selfie with the iconic blue train as the background. The towering Chid Lom and Langsuan Road skyline also surrounds Roof 409, and the abundance of greenery also helps create a kind of cosy, intimate rooftop setting.
Although we’d choose to sit outside 99% of the time, Roof 409 Bangkok does have an equally impressive inside restaurant, complete which sparkling white tiles, quirky dangling light bulbs, comfy seating and a well-stocked bar. We’re guessing this space might fill up a bit more during rainy season, or when things get too hot during the daytime.
The menu is described as ‘modern bistro’, although with the owner hailing from Paris, expect a lineup of quintessentially French flavours (such as the highly recommend coq au vin for 370 baht), alongside daily specials, burgers and chicken nuggets. Lunch at Roof 409 is set at a rather wallet-friendly 240 baht, and that gets you a main dish and beverage (the Dish of the Day changes daily).
As for the drinks, there’s a comprehensive menu of imported beers from England and Belgium (including Brew Dog, our personal favourite). They’re also running a pretty tempting 150 baht-a-glass offer on Mojitos every Thursday, great value for money in our books considering some rooftop bars in Bangkok charge two or three times this. Want to splurge a bit more? Then put your faith in their talented in-house mixologist; we tried an (as-of-yet) untitled mix of raspberry vodka, chestnut liquor, cacao, and passion fruit. Price wise, think more 260-300 baht for these.
Take the BTS Skytrain from Chit Lom to Ploen Chit Station and it’s easy to spot Roof 409’s bold sign, especially when it’s illuminated at night across the Ploenchit-Langsuan junction. Find the bar by taking the BTS to Chid Lom, use the direct walkway to connect to Mercury Ville, then head up to the fourth floor. There’s also access from street level – just look for the bright red Mercury Ville building and take the elevators up.
