  • The Rock Pub Bangkok

    Bangkok's House of Rock

    0

The Rock Pub Bangkok is a long-running live music venue lying at the foot of Ratchathewi BTS Station in central Bangkok. With over 20 years in the game, and a modest list of international acts to grace their stage, this dingy Bangkok spot has gained an institution-like status for anyone into their rock n roll – and anything in between.

Expect plenty of guitars, lots of head-banging and even the odd mosh pit when it gets really crowded. The range of rock genres you’ll hear is diverse too, with bands playing everything from heavy metal, grunge, thrash and post-hardcore, depending on the night.

  • Not to be confused with the Hard Rock Café, (Bangkok does have one at Siam Square), The Rock Pub is an independently run venue that shies away from inflated tourist prices and same-old tried and tested rock classics. Instead, drinks are cheap and the music is loud and alternative, showcasing the best local talent as well as the odd international guest. One thing The Rock Pub and the Hard Rock Café do share in common is their love for rock memorabilia; you’ll find plenty of posters, artwork, clothing and guitars draped around the walls just like its more famous competitor.

The exterior of the Rock Pub Bangkok follows a rather odd caveman/castle theme – a bit tacky and strange considering inside is rather modern looking, with shiny new furnishing and a sophisticated, gleaming bar, and although being around for over 20 years, the whole place feels modern and welcoming.

Show up early to the Rock Pub Bangkok, and you’ll probably be disappointed. Whilst its doors open at 19:00 every day, the first act doesn’t usually take to the stage until around 22:00, and even then it can still be empty. For the peak/noisiest times, arrive around midnight on Friday or Saturday. There’s no official dress code here, but if you turn up in your flip flops and ‘I love Bangkok’ t-shirt you’re going feel completely out of place. Best to go for jeans, proper shoes and if you really want to fit in – dress in black!

The Rock Pub Bangkok is particularly easy and convenient to find. Just take the Sukhumvit BTS line to Ratchathewi, and then take exit four.
