Rain Hill Plaza on Sukhumvit 47

Urban Lifestyle Mall in Bangkok

Rain Hill feels a little out of place in Bangkok… but in a good way. Laid out over five floors, this eco-friendly shopping mall, decorated with manicured trees, focuses on independent eateries and boutique fashion stores. The real draw here is the specialist restaurants with the chance to pick up some unique fashion an added benefit. Located on Sukhumvit 49, Rain Hill is half way between Thong Lor and Phrom Phong BTS stations, and even though it lacks the convenience of direct access from a skytrain station, it is little more than a ten minute walk either way.

Restaurants

Although there is a definite focus on Japanese inspired restaurants, Rain Hill offers visitors the chance to eat their way through a varied choice of world cuisine with great options for either a quick lunch time snack or an evening dining experience.

Penguin Likes Chocolate

A cute café with an even cuter logo, Penguin Likes Chocolate ensures visitors’ blood sugar levels are kept peaking with a selection of sweet and chocolatey treats. It has successfully mixed the image of an English teashop with a young and playful vibe; as if a mother designed the layout and let her daughter buy the ornaments. The dessert menu includes waffles, cheese cakes and brownies but our favourite is the penguin lava which is a chocolate pot with a pudding-like casing holding deliciously rich chocolate sauce inside, accompanied by chopped strawberries and ice cream for dunking. The limited sofa space mean only a lucky few will be able to sit back and really enjoy the kooky décor of stuffed penguins and miniature plants, but there is plenty of shaded seating outside.

Wine Connection Tapas Bar and Bistro

The king pin of Rain Hill, Wine Connection is the first restaurant you see upon entering Rain Hill. The menu is a simple collection of fuss-free favourites and accompanies the reason for the restaurant’s success – unbeatable prices on wine. An inviting glass-fronted façade, cascading water features and tree lined walkway lead up to the restaurant which has extensive seating both inside and out and a cool, urbane atmosphere. The food is a fairly predictable mix of pizzas, pastas and salads with a few meat and fish options for mains. You can buy a carafe of wine for under 500 baht, and that really is special in Bangkok. The range of German and Belgian beers are also excellent value and worthy of a particular mention is the Blanche de Bruxelles wheat beer: exclusive to Wine Connection, it is one of the tastiest tipples in Bangkok.

Opening Hours: 10:00 – 01:00

Marugame Seimen

Marugame Seimen is a speciality udon noodles restaurant that – judging by the queue of people at weekends – has found favour with the Japanese contingent of Bangkok. It is a fast food concept restaurant where diners choose their type of noodles and broth then move to the next station to choose their tempura, kitsune tofu or other delicacy to add to the meal. The execution of the concept is excellent and, most importantly, the udon noodles are fresh, chewy and as authentic as any backstreet udon stand in Tokyo. To enhance the vibe, the chefs are dressed in the starched whites typical of an udon seller and Japanese signs are dotted around. The traditional flavour of udon with tofu and garnished with spring onion and ginger is a delicious introduction and the classic recipe, but for those who like more of a kick to their meal, the spicy seafood udon is a playful blend of Thailand and Japan with tom yum flavour broth, shrimp and mushrooms a delicious accompaniment to the noodles.

Shuffle Rustic Cuisine and Bar

The sheet metal and exposed pipes of Shuffle state its intention as an industrial chic hangout for the cool and super-cool alike. The menu is western inspired with the mains menu containing a lot of hearty meat dishes – much to the delight of meat-lovers. The barbeque ribs are definite ‘go to’ option and their signature burger is one of the best around. From the share menu, the herb fries with cheesy dip and crispy deep fried chicken wings make the perfect accompaniment to one of Shuffle’s three craft beers imported directly from the US. Floor-to-ceiling windows wrap their way around the restaurant which has views out onto Sukhumvit below with a wide outdoor decking area for a nice change of atmosphere.

Shops

The handful shops in Rain Hill make it suitable for a leisurely browse before or after a meal rather than an all out shopping expedition. At Rain Hill you will find – among the hairdressers and beauty salons – a number of interesting boutique shops with unique and hard-to-find items to impress your friends back home.

Him and Her

Him and Her is a rare gem of a shop – somewhere both men and women can shop together, patiently browsing their range of vintage and new items. There’s no real overarching style in Him and Her, rather just a guarantee of quality; sexy party dresses are displayed next to ethnic blouses and Fedoras but it adds to the excitement of searching for the next one-off item. On the aisle there’s a mix of T-shirts and more dressy evening shirts, with bags, ties and other accessories.

Triple Stitched

The ornate, narrow door at Triple Stitched leads into a treasure trove of vintage denim, classic 60s sunglasses and American brand checked shirts. This diminutive menswear store has enough stock packed on its shelves to kit out the coolest of rock’n’roll bands…and their audience. There are signs of wear and tear on some of their items so be sure to check out items before you buy, but this place stocks some real stand out Indie style.

ASAP

ASAP is a chic boutique mainly focusing on women’s fashion although there is a range of clothes for the whole family. The designer at ASAP is definitely tailoring for the Japanese market with some eye-catching fitted pieces and fashion accessories suitable for everyday wear. There is a variety of signature styles – funky tribal scarves with bold use of colour hang next to a range of leather handbags and belts. Among the more striking items available are fitted dresses with asymmetrical hems that would grace an evening out to any of Bangkok’s top nightspots.
