Pizza Massilia Ruam Rudee

High-End Pizza Restaurant in Ploenchit

Pizza Massilia, already famed for its pizza truck in Silom, has opened a huge new restaurant in Ploenchit, serving the same top quality pizzas and a selection of Italian and Provencal dishes. Opened by a group of very experienced restauranteurs, you can tell they really have their finger on the pulse of Bangkok’s dining scene. This restaurant seats over 100 and, as you may have guessed from the name, they specialise in one thing: pizzas!

The wood-fired pizza oven is the pride and joy of Pizza Massilia, giving the Romana-style crust a lovely aroma and lightly charred base. Four types of flour and mineral water go into the pizza dough although the recipe is kept a secret even from staff. Almost all ingredients are imported from Italy and no expense has been spared; they’ve even imported the chef from Rome.

The dining room at Pizza Massilia is glamorously furnished in a Rococo style which reminds us of a flamboyant auntie’s house with plenty of sculptures, ornate furnishings and gilded mirrors. We think it will appeal to Asian sensibilities more than Europeans but it suits the concept of high-end pizza well.

Starting from 250 baht, the pizzas are incredibly good here. The base is light and airy with just a touch of firmness to it. The dough is allowed to rise for 72 hours to achieve such texture. As for toppings, the Bufalina (490 baht) is simply Buffalo Mozzarella on top of organic tomato sauce with basil leaves and olive oil. Simple, clean flavours fantastically put together. For something more adventurous there is burrata and culatello ham (cured for two years) or Fassone beef carpaccio with parmesan, rocket and lemon zest – a particular favourite of ours!

Pizza dominates the menu at this restaurant, although some other options are not to be overlooked. The spaghetti with clams (420 baht) is simple but very tasty, with al dente pasta which is finished in the pizza oven with a light gratin. The bouillabaisse (310 baht) is more of an interpretation of the classic French dish as, instead of the usual broth, it is reduced down to a sauce and loaded with tomato sauce. It is enjoyable and the young squid is extremely fresh (delivered direct from Hokkaido every day) but don’t expect the traditional taste of the sea. For dessert, the Le Baba is an old Neapolitan dish that comes with sweet brioche-type bread, vanilla ice cream made in their sister-restaurant, almonds and mint (290 baht). It’s a suitably sweet end to the meal.

Gourmet pizzas are something relatively new to Bangkok, but finally the city is demanding more from a pizzeria than stodgy, processed Pizza Hut-style fast food. Pizza Massilia is among an elite few pizzerias in Bangkok that make truly great renditions, and the dining room is rather fancy enough to impress a first date too.
