The interior of Medinii Restaurant has perfectly balanced chic and comfort; as you enter you will find the bar and lounge area with some funky swinging sofas arranged like a booth to your left, which could easily become a little too precarious after your third cocktail, but makes a great spot for aperitifs. The main section of the marble floored restaurant is interspersed with large panels to make the seating areas more intimate, with cosy bucket seats for extended lunch breaks. If you want a little seclusion there is even a private dining room at Medinii. The double length windows offer a fantastic view of Sukhumvit Road, so if you are booking for a special occasion, ask for one of the tables with a vista – although it may be a little vertiginous for those who are afraid of heights.
In the evenings, the a la carte menu has a strong Italian theme, with pastas, pizzas and other Roman favourites. This is also reflected in the lunch buffet, with the starter section boasting a large joint of parma ham that is freshly sliced and served with melon, smoked salmon, a variety of cheeses, soup , at least four different kinds of bread and a selection of salads, of which the duck salad is my favourite. They also cater for those who want some local flavour with favourites such as an extremely spicy Thai pork salad and crispy prawn spring rolls served with a sweet chilli dipping sauce. Medinii also serve one hot Thai dish with rice at every lunch buffet, on this occasion a green curry with either white noodles, plain or fried rice as an accompaniment.
When it came to main courses we were spoilt for choice. You can either have spaghetti, penne or angel’s hair pasta, served with arrabiata, carbonara or even salmon and white wine sauce. There are over half a dozen pizzas to pick from, including a green curry, eggplant and chilli variety. If this isn’t enough, there is a small selection of meat and fish to fill you up. As always with buffets, it’s important to leave room for dessert, and Medinii at Continent Hotel is no exception with both Italian and Thai flavours. All served in bite-sized portions, it was easy to try an assortment: mango mousse, crème brûlée, panna cotta, green tea roll and a selection of Thai sweets.
For only 499 baht, Medinii Italian Restaurant is a great value lunch option in Asoke, where you can eat your fill of Italian and Thai delights whilst enjoying the view from the 35th floor.

The Continent Bangkok by Compass Hospitality has one of the most envious locations in Bangkok, a few steps from the Asoke junction on Sukhumvit Road, and only minutes from the skytrain, MRT and Terminal 21 Mall - one of the most popular shopping centres in the city. The hotels travelling theme is cleverly incorporated into the hotel surroundings and facilities but it never feels overdone: the awning over the front entrance has a Parisian feel, as do the chandeliers that hang over the black and gold reception and if you head up to Axis and Spin rooftop bar, there is an almost Phileas Fogg gentlemans club feel to the space, albeit with fantastic views of Bangkoks skyscrapers.
