A curious sight for first time visitors to Q Bar in Bangkok is found right at the back of the club in the form of a polished brass revolving door that swings into Le Derriere, an absinthe and champagne bar with an amazing design concept. It’s like walking into a derelict 19th Century Parisian drawing room and the crumbling grandeur is expertly executed with peeling walls, chequered tile flooring and plush, red velvet furniture bought from flea markets in France. Lanterns bathe everything in a bronze tint and an antique absinthe fountain takes pride of place on the bar. There is no private entrance to Le Derriere so you must first enter Q Bar and walk through the club, but if you intend on visiting Le Derriere only then mention it to the door staff as you enter because – depending on the night – they may well waive the entry fee.

Le Derriere has a wide variety of drinks to enjoy but the emphasis is on wine and absinthe. Indeed, it’s the only bar in Bangkok that has a dedicated absinthe menu with seven different types to try from across Europe (starting from 350 baht). The drink is poured over ice and through a sugar cube sitting atop a specially designed slotted spoon. There is also an excellent wine list with champagne by the glass and monthly specials on some prestigious labels. The premium cocktail list is also worth a look, with the V.I.P Mojito coming highly recommended, despite the hefty price: Instead of rum, here they blend Cognac VSOP with the characteristic mint leaves, brown sugar, lime, all topped up with a splash of ginger ale. The short menu consists of gourmet treats such as French oysters in the half shell, saucisson (cured sausage), French cheeses, and foie gras.
Half of Le Derriere in Bangkok is open air (with a canopy for those rainy months) so smoking is allowed and the throbbing house music in Q Bar is replaced by swing jazz with thick velvet curtains to keep most of the sound out. On Tuesday nights Le Derriere has a discount on several of their absinthes, the perfect excuse if you fancy seeing the fabled green fairy on the cheap...just make sure you don’t have to fly home, go to work or move house the next day.
If you are out to impress, this is a great late night venue on Sukhumvit Soi 11, capturing the glamour of a bygone age and making it somehow innately modern. Le Derriere (and its father club Q Bar) is towards the end of the street, a good 10 minute walk from Nana BTS Station or a quick taxi from the entrance of Soi 11.
