Il cielo Dusit Thani welcomes you in with the warm colours of Tuscany to this modern Italian restaurant and serves plenty of Mediterranean food prepared with imported ingredients in their open kitchen.
Lunch time offers some fantastic deals, but most impressive is the appetiser buffet. Here you can have your fill of Italy’s best antipasti, creamy buffalo mozzarella, cured meats, fresh salads, roasted vegetables and mini chicken pesto burgers to name but a few. The country has so much fantastic produce and a buffet is the perfect way to get a taste of it all. For 600 baht ++ you also get a choice of four main courses and the dessert of the day, including a rich luxurious individual tiramisu embellished with a curl of white chocolate. It comes as no surprise that this lunch deal is so popular, as there are not many places in the city to get such great flavours and value for money.
The skill and palate of the chef really shines on the a la carte menu. The citrus marinated Tasmanian salmon is a colourful, summery starter: slices of fish with a tangy orange dressing topped off with crunchy fennel salad and a sprinkle of edible rose petals. With so many delicious mains it is hard to make a decision, but three dishes stand out. The generously portioned rack of lamb with roasted aubergine puree and paprika potatoes is well presented, and the meat succulent and flavourful. For something a little lighter try the snow fish. It comes to the table in the bag in which is it steamed, which looks odd but protects the delicate flavours.

When I think of Italy I think of pasta, and my favourite dish has to be the duck ragout paccheri with Pecorino cheese. Cooked perfectly al dente and complementing the duck and cheese; this is a pasta dish you won’t forget in a hurry. Drinks wise there is a decent selection of fine wines from Italy, including some fantastically bubbly prosecco. The coffee is as close as you can get to Rome’s cafes whilst still in Bangkok.
Although il cielo is on the upper ground floor of the Dusit Thani hotel, the vibe is pleasingly casual. With views onto the downstairs terrace and courtyard waterfall you really do feel a million miles away from bustling Bangkok. The restaurant itself is modern, with a warm autumnal feel: bright oranges, cream and burnt Sienna velvet chairs and a pale wood curved ceiling. It’s ideal for business lunches or family brunches at the weekend with a pizza focussed special on Saturdays and Sundays. In the evenings the intimate space is a perfect spot for a romantic dinner for two or a special celebration.
There may be plenty of places to grab a slice of pizza in Bangkok, but if you are looking for something more refined, with quality ingredients and a smart-casual chic vibe, then il cielo restaurant at Dusit Thani ticks all the boxes.
