Hard Rock Café Bangkok
Legendary Live Music Restaurant in Siam Square
Nothing short of an institution, Hard Rock Café Bangkok delivers the same fun times, friendly staff and belly-busting burgers associated with all branches of this incredibly popular franchise. It’s a reassuring slice of Americana for the travel-weary, a place to unwind after a day of sightseeing, and, as night falls, one of the most famous places in the city to rock out to live music. Located in Siam Square, the entrance is only a few paces away from Siam BTS station and MBK, Siam Discovery and Siam Paragon shopping malls; an ideal place to capture its target market of tourists and expats.
If you’ve ever been to a Hard Rock Café before, there will be no surprises here. They have stuck close to the tried and tested formula of Rock anthems on the stereo, memorabilia on the walls and a Tex-Mex inspired menu that will delight anyone who is apprehensive about Thai food or has eaten one phad thai too many. As you would expect from an American diner, the portions are enormous – especially the hickory smoked bar-b-que ribs that hang off the plate in a comical Flintstones-esque fashion. The hamburgers are a real draw too. The legendary burger costs 600baht but it’s so big there should be a medal awarded for finishing it. There is a limited selection of Thai food but with the prices three or four times more expensive than other places, it’s advised to stick to the classic Western dishes that are Hard Rock’s trademark.
Built over three floors, the entrance is faced by a stage that is put to full effect most nights of the week from 21:30 onwards. Expect cover versions of famous anthems to get the crowd dancing and singing. The interior was renovated in mid-2012 and the muted red-and-black colour scheme has a raw, somewhat industrial feel, far removed from the brighter, more convivial décor which had started to feel a bit dated. The platinum records, recognizable instruments and signed pictures still remain though – It wouldn’t be Hard Rock Café without them.
Another unchanging element to the Hard Rock experience is the extensive drinks menu, with signature cocktails such as pina colada and margarita being popular with tourists at 300 baht each. Pay a little more and you can have it served in a souvenir glass. Of course, to help wash down the burger and fries, there’s also a range of draft and bottled beers for the guys.
The adjoining Hard Rock shop sells T-shirts and teddies with that famous logo on an ever-growing range of products. All credit to the Hard Rock marketing team for making a Hard Rock Cafe T-shirt an almost obligatory purchase for tourists to take back home. To suit the tourist schedule, both the gift shop and the restaurant stay open until midnight (01:00 on weekends) long after other venues have stopped cooking.
Hard Rock strikes a great balance between a high level of quality and an easy-going charm which is great for friends or families. The staff work hard to show you a good time, speak excellent English and, although the Americana theme is undoubtedly contrived, it is also designed to entertain.
