D'Sens Restaurant at Dusit Thani Bangkok

Dinner with a View from Dusit Thani Hotel

D'Sens at the well known Dusit Thani Hotel is an exceptional French Restaurant in Silom, perfect for a special occasion, a birthday or an anniversary. The restaurant offers beautiful views on Lumpini Park and Rama IV road from the 21st floor and the food is an unforgettable experience. Another reason for our going there is that the Dusit Thani is home of the famous Cordon Bleu Cooking School, so it's a truly special place and our expectations were rather high.

Dusit Thani might be one of the oldest luxury hotels in Bangkok but it hasn't aged; it's classic and charming, still looking elegant and sophisticated as you cross the vast lobby to reach the elevator.

The lift opens on the 21st floor and a waitress walks you to your table or if you prefer a drink before dinner, to the bar made of a large tropical aquarium.

The first thing people usually do here is to get a glimpse through the windows to appreciate the views. So to enjoy the best of Bangkok with the last rays of light over Lumpini Park, it is recommended to book a table by the side windows, the ones overlooking the park. The restaurant doesn't get crowded but there are not many tables on the park side and the views from the circular area at the end of the restaurant are not as nice, just a lot of buildings. And don't miss the ceiling-to-floor windows in the restrooms; it's not often do you find 'toilet with a view'!

Once the time is right, you can choose to dine a la carte or try the special five-course menu.

We simplified things by ordering both. My dining partner ordered a la carte, starting with excellent frogs legs, then delicious tender Wagyu beef cooked to perfection, which is not always a given as medium rare has a different meaning depending where the chef is from, to end with a nicely presented original version of a mille-feuille. I went for the degustation menu, starting with a light salmon salad with lemon emulsion, then a sweet pea velvety 'a la Française' chanterelle fricassé, steamed sole filet with green asparagus and black truffle and lemon butter emulsion. The main course was roasted lamb saddle with thyme, smoked carrots with aromatic garnish, coriander coulis and roasted shallots, followed by a selection of French farmhouse cheese with condiments end concluded with a delicious vacherin revised with strawberries from the Royal Project.

All dishes without exception were simply delicious and each was a tasting discovery. Every single plate came beautifully presented, just the right size for us to be able to appreciate it all without having to give up half way; however we were seriously full at the end of the meal and had to decline the coffees and teas.

Food was served in a timely manner, just fast enough to appreciate the cozy atmosphere of the restaurant with its soft dimmed lights. Service was discreet but efficient, and watching the lights and silent movements the city under our feet created a magical mood.

The price for the dinner including cocktails and a little wine was of course expensive, around 8,000 baht for two once compulsory tax was added, but this was not simply a dinner, it was a real culinary experience to remember...
