Distil, the second rooftop bar located on top of the famous lebua tower, is a cocktail bar and lounge marrying the most innovative drinks in Bangkok with a seriously awe-inspiring view from the 64th floor of lebua Hotel. Comprised of an indoor seating area of comfy sofas, a circular bar, and an outdoor cigar terrace, this is a sophisticated place where guests can expect to sample some finer rarities that few other bars in Bangkok can boast: exclusive wines, cigars, rare whiskies, and resident DJs playing jazzy lounge house. There is a smart casual dress code and guests must be over 20 years of age. While most tourists run to the iconic Sky Bar, people in-the-know prefer the more relaxed atmosphere of the Distil rooftop bar.
This part-indoor, part-outdoor cocktail bar is part of the exclusive collection of restaurants and bars on the 63rd to 65th floor of lebua at State Tower Hotel, grouped under the umbrella name of The Dome. It consists of Mezzaluna fine dining restaurant, serving European influenced cuisine over a four or seven course taster menu, Breeze pan-Asian restaurant, Distil creative cocktail bar and, the best known of the group, Sirocco al fresco Mediterranean styled restaurant with the accompanying Sky Bar with expansive cityscape views. If you are looking for artistic and delicious cocktails then try Distil: a refined bar that has comfortable lounge seats and an outside smoking area.
To match the remarkable drinks, there is an equally impressive menu of premium sushi and sashimi, and the oyster bar here has twice weekly deliveries of some of the finest varieties in the world: Eagle Rock, Pickering Passage, Hama Hama and Fines de Claire. Distil also has four types of Iranian caviar, including the exclusive Beluga Imperial Huso Huso and Almas, considered one of the rarest and most expensive types in the world. There is something about rooftop views and flamboyant cocktails that go together, and if you mix the most expressive cocktails with the most impressive view in Bangkok then you have a sure fire ‘wow’ inducing experience. The lebua Hotel will forever be encapsulated in the Hollywood tale of misadventure called The Hangover 2, and undeniably this fame draws many additional guests, but the incredibly creative signature cocktails, gourmet snacking menu, and stunning vista are the only things you will be talking about after a night at Distil.
The head mixologist at Distil is Ron Ramirez and he has taken inspiration from the world of molecular cuisine and a lifetime of travelling the world to create a series of cocktail ‘concepts’. Anyone who enjoys creative cocktails will simply love his concoctions, with a range of classic recipes being given a complete makeover. In the ‘Ice’ concept (so called because ingredients have been frozen to release more flavours as the melt), five cocktails have been created as a tribute to certain countries: Thailand is represented by the rum based same-same but different cocktail, with pandan leaf ice sticks and fresh coconut jelly, there is also a rose fashioned, turning the masculine, bourbon-based cocktail from America on its head, with rose petals and rose essence frozen inside the ice. However, our favourite was a Mexican inspired cocktail called Sinor, which is a revised margarita with two types of chilli frozen in ice, rosemary-agave scents and red wine flavoured salt on the rim of the glass – this drink is like a journey in itself!
