  • Como Shambhala Spa at Metropolitan Hotel Bangkok

    Best Spa in Sathorn

Shambhala Spa at the Metropolitan hotel in Bangkok offers treatments with a difference, experiences that are so relaxing that there’s a tendency to fall asleep half way through. Offering a range of facials, massages and therapies that are influenced by Asia, it’s one of our top picks for best luxury spa in Bangkok. Here you can enjoy traditional Thai massage or one of their signature offerings.

Shambhala Spa is located in the Metropolitan Hotel on Sathorn Road, around a ten minute walk from the MRT at Lumpini. It’s worth arriving a little earlier than your appointment time so you can make the most of the steam rooms and hydro pool that are available in both the men’s and women’s changing areas.

  • You enter Shambhala Spa via the bright restaurant on the 1st floor, which works in tandem with the spa, with an aim to offer health and wellbeing to guests, looking after them both inside and out. The Metropolitan Hotel is one of the most fabulously scented hotels in the city, and the spa is no different. It’s a place of peace and calm, where voices are kept to a hush and music to a low murmur. As with all reputable spas, you are talked through the treatment and given a chance to tailor it to your needs; you can ask for certain areas of the body or avoid any bumps and bruises that would cause pain. There are also a couple of quick health questions to answer before changing and entering one of the private treatment rooms.

I was lucky enough to enjoy the spa’s signature treatment, the Shambhala massage (75 minutes for 3000 baht). It’s truly unlike any other massage I have experienced. Before we start, the friendly and softly spoken therapist listens to my requirements and makes me perfectly at ease, checking that the room temperature and music volume are suitable. Starting with my feet and moving the whole length of my body to my arms, the perfectly pressured strokes ease the knots and tensions that my body seems to have collected from spending most of the week hunched over a computer, with extra work required on those in my neck and shoulders. It feels a little uncomfortable at the time, but as I leave I can tell the tension has disappeared. The massage ends with the masseuse doing her best to soothe the worry lines on my face.

Although my top recommendation would be their signature massage, as the technique and experience is so different from other luxury spas in Bangkok, Shambhala Spa offer a wide variety of treatments. Massage therapies include a traditional Thai massage (75 minutes at 2400 baht) which has elements of yoga and stretching to it and deep tissue massage (75 minutes at 3000 baht). Facials (starting at 3000 baht) are packed with antioxidants to offer an anti-aging treatment and use acupressure to clear the mind from any worrying thoughts. If you are looking for the ultimate treat then consider spending a day at Shambhala Urban Escape and enjoying a healthy lunch and juices from Glow Wellness Restaurant next door.

If you’re looking to splash out on an extra special treatment, then the spa at Metropolitan hotel is a great choice. The treatments are unusual and personally tailored, and you will leave feeling younger, lighter and happier.
