Chang Chui Bangkok Plane Night Market is taking Bangkok night markets to new heights. You will find a nice selection of shopping and dining here, combined with modern, urban and often wacky art pieces, much of it made from recycled and scrap materials. The concept behind the night market is that ‘nothing is useless’ and we’re confident you’ll be deeply impressed by what the artists have managed to create.
The huge shell of an Airbus is the real head turner at Chang Chui, but as you explore the grounds you will find loads more sculptures and urban art pieces. It seems every walkway leads to something interesting. This feature makes this is one of the best night markets in Bangkok.
Highlights of Chang Chui Bangkok Plane Market
Besides the generally cool, artistic vibe, you can enjoy a wide selection of food, craft beer and shop for some boutique fashion pieces. You won’t find the wide variety of clothes you would at Bangkok’s bigger night markets, but we were impressed by some hand-printed T-shirts being sold be the designer himself, as well as some one-of-a-kind iPhone covers.
If you come for dinner, there’s plenty to choose from. The most striking and memorable restaurant is Insects in the Backyard, which serves fancy plated dishes created with insects. It might sound unpalatable, but this is high-level cuisine – and an amazing story to tell back home! If that sounds too adventurous, consider a nice English tearoom or a tasty burger. You’ll also find more typical Thai market snacks, which you can eat as you seek out the next amazing art piece.
Entertainment at Chang Chui Bangkok Plane Market
Towards the back of the market is a row of bars, serving ice cold beers at little more than 100 baht. They are usually frequented by quite Bohemian young Thais.
There are two performance spaces at Chang Chui, with an assortment of acoustic and jazz performers playing throughout the night. You can grab a beer or a fruit smoothie and just sit down to enjoy the music and ambiance. The whole area is pet-friendly, so you’ll see lots of Thai families with their puppies around in the early evening.
The one downside about Chang Chui is its location, in the suburbs of Bangkok. For those staying close to the Old City and Khao San, this market is quite easy to reach by taxi. But if you are travelling from the downtown areas of Sukhumvit or Silom, getting here requires up to an hour’s drive through evening traffic.
