Caveman Base Bangkok

Craft Beers and Video Games on Ekkamai

Caveman Base Bangkok is a bar in Ekkamai specializing in the manly pursuits of steaks, craft beers, and multiplayer video games. Throw in an air-hockey table and a whole row of board games and you have countless hours of fun waiting for you, just 2 minutes’ walk from Ekkamai BTS skytrain station on Sukhumvit Road. Think Caveman Base and you might imagine images of a dank, dark basement and worn-out sofas, but, on the contrary, the whole place feels brand new with tasteful dark wood.

Despite the masculine-sounding name, this fun bar attracts a fair few female gamers too. They have a Nintendo Wii U and a PlayStation 4, with plenty of games. In fact, if they don’t have the game you’re looking for, they will order it in for your next visit. Mortal Kombat is a fun button basher, but we especially loved the Nintendo Land multiplayer game on the Wii U, which seems specially designed for this kind of environment. For hardcore gamers there are some open format role-player games too. To play either console costs 300 baht per group, which is excellent value.

What to Eat at Caveman Base Bangkok

The menu at Caveman Base Bangkok includes five cuts of steak, priced at 380 baht for striploin, 690 baht for tenderloin and 990 baht for a 200g wagyu striploin. We wholeheartedly suggest the tenderloin, which is just about the best value you can find around Sukhumvit. Each cut of meat is given a dry rub of secret herbs, along with a homemade chimichurri dipping sauce that was perfected by the Malaysian/Swedish owner, Danny, and his girlfriend, Boat.

For a large group, try the T-Rex: all five cuts of steak presented on a wooden platter (not suitable for vegetarians). For homesick Swedes, there’s also Pyttipanna on the menu, which is a potato and sausage dish, topped with a skull-shaped egg.

The list of beers is impressive. On draft you’ll find Vedett and la Chouffe., while the list of bottles fills a whole page. Several American breweries are represented including Rogue and Anderson valley (250 baht). Each month there will be specials to add variety. A bottle of Singha costs 130 baht. For non-boozy alternatives at Caveman Base, try their thick shakes. Go traditional with chocolate or take the hipster route with their bacon vanilla shake.

This is clearly a labour of love for the young owners, who have made a place to indulge all their favourite things. Is it a restaurant, a bar or a games shop? The answer is, it’s a bit of all three. They have TVs showing live sports, too.
